Todd Saunders: The Latest Architecture and News

Todd Saunders: New Northern Houses

Much of architect Todd Saunders’s work over recent years has been focussed upon his two homelands, Canada and Norway, and other northern countries. In some respects, these distant territories on either side of the Atlantic are worlds apart yet, as one begins to look more closely, many similarities start to reveal themselves born of their latitudes and landscapes. Canada and Norway have similar climates, with extreme variations between summer and winter, while their topographies also have much in common with one another. These are territories where the mountains meet the water and the sea, with their islands, inlets and fjords playing an important part in the history, culture and traditions of both places. These multiple links may help to explain overlaps in the architecture of these northern regions and also the way in which both Canada and Norway have pulled upon Todd Saunders’ heartstrings.

Bringing Design to a Broad Audience: The 7th New York Architecture and Design Film Festival

October has become a busy month in the design world. If you’re living in the United States, New York specifically, it means Archtober: a portmanteau that means the city is flooded with architecture activities, programs and exhibitions, piled onto an already rich design calendar. One of these events is the New York Architecture & Design Film Festival, which started on Tuesday night and runs through Sunday October 18th, and will screen 30 films from around the world in 15 curated, themed programs.

This week, I was able to visit the festival to absorb the atmosphere and speak to the festival's director Kyle Bergman, to learn the ins and outs of this year’s festival, how things got started, and where it will go in the future.

When the Strange Meets the Familiar: Saunders Architecture on Fogo Island

Fogo is a small, rocky outcrop off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, with a population of just over 2000 people. Its sub-arctic natural landscape of lakes, rivers and mountains is interspersed by eleven small settlements and has now become the scene for a collection of follies, studios and residences designed by Norwegian practice Saunders Architecture. Most recently, Fogo's rocky wilderness and contemporary architectural interest—reminiscent of the land around Todd Saunders' current home city of Bergen—has been captured in a one-hour documentary film directed by Marcia Connolly and Katherine Knight, entitled Strange & Familar: Architecture on Fogo Island.

Led by a strong contemporary design sensibility, Saunders has worked on cultural and residential projects right across Norway, as well as England, Denmark, Italy, Sweden and Canada. The studio believes that architecture must play an important role in creating place, using form, materials and texture to help evoke and shape memory and human interaction.
