The Shingle House / NORD Architecture / Living Architecture

Set for completion this October, NORD Architecture’s Shingle House will be part of the Living Architecture vacation houses, a project aimed to enhance the public’s appreciation of architecture.  For their project, the young practice responded to the site’s strong winds and incorporated a modern take on the typical shingle homes that are scattered across the area.

More images and more about the home after the break.

On the exterior, the house is finished with tarred black shingles. The simplicity of the treatment creates a sense of monumentality as the volume appears more like a stoic object then a typical home.

However, for the interior, the dominance of black is only used to accent certain areas; and, the combination of concrete and wood draws attention to the interior’s rich geometry.

I can accept the fact that residential “architecture” is largely about isolated designer objects on big land and with no neighbours in sight. Historically, it is so.

However, I’ve never really understood Living Architecture’s self-proclaimed mission to enhance the public’s appreciation of architecture by commissioning a series of designer holiday homes. Will “the public” appreciate “the simplicity of the treatment creating a sense of monumentality as the volume appears more like a stoic object than a typical home”? Sounds to me like inoffensive materials are being pimped up with architectspeak.

Seeing some architectural magic in a plan (!) might change my mind, but nah – I think I’ll holiday somewhere else.

    Graham McKay,
you should overcome your professional and private downturns. (It is sad to find your bitter comments here and there on some blogs). Your problem was always related to your own complexes and not the success of others. Still, you shouldn’t try to find the excuse for your own failures in the doing of others, but try to get your feet back onto the ground – maybe something outside the architectural field. You didn’t drop out, because you don’t have an Harvard degree. You did drop out because of your personal and professional lacks and failures, and this is your own fault and no one else is to be blamed for it. Don’t go on in bitterness – it will only drag you further down.
Take this advice from a “friend” from far, and god knows, there are not too many left…

Did I read somewhere that the images are wonderful… how so?
They give me the willies.

And friend (Mother), do you have a problem with honesty in thought?… when will you ever get off my case, and no! I won’t be home for the holidays.

Say hi to Dad and pet Suffy.
