Spain Pavillion for Shanghai 2010 Expo

By Sebastian J — Filed under: News , , , , ,

spain-2The Spain Pavilion will have a steel structure and a wicker cover. Spanish handcrafters will weave out different patterns by using different colors of wicker, said Benedetta Tagliabue, designer of the pavilion. The wicker will be covered by a special material that is water-proof. It will also keep the pavilion at a comfortable temperature, said Tagliabue.

Also, the pavilion of course is very strong, she said. The designers have considered the possibility of bad weather during the Expo period such as typhoons or the summer Plum Rain season, said Tagliabue. The Spanish government is going to invest 1.8 million euros (US$2.6 million) in the pavilion, said Javier Conde de Saro, Spain’s commissioner general for World Expo Shanghai.

The pavilion, with a total floor area of 8,500 square meters, will have both open squares for cultural performances and an indoor area for exhibitions and cafeterias.

kind of an interesting idea…

but in all seriousness, won’t this take an eternity to build?… or weave?

it just doesn’t seem like a rational design plan.

Looks like there’s a competition for the worst expo pavilion ever. Failing Frank Gehry wannabe

obviously you don’t know the background of this woman and her late partner Enric Miralles, they have built far more complicated work than this, i don’t like the renderings but the project looks promising

Like many other projects, this may actually turnout much better than rendered. When I get past the crudeness of the illustration and just look at the overall form, I really like it.

i think it was this that the brazilian pavillion meant by saying “handmade brazilians craft” when they said that bunch of wood painted in green were brazilians handmade native works…

I visited the Barcelona firm in May and my group was showed this project. The physical models they had and the process they were driving with sold the project a lot more. I wish they had pictures of their models, because they were awesome. They are quite an amazing firm.

this guy enric was very good but the mastermind behind his projects was his first wife carmé pinos.. i really don’t know benedetta’s work, but the proposal it’s very intresting

    Peter says:

I think the partnership with Carme Pinos was a better one but most of the known work was done years after they separated
I still think Carme is one of the best of the whole Spanish Armada but she often does not get the recognition she deserves but that said this project is totally out of the collaboration of Miraalles Tagliabue and I will also include the genius of Josep Mias

    Döme says:

    Yes, it is similar!
…but I`m glad to see that the the wicker-skin facade is living on…even if the structure is a manneristic monument, I would love to walk trough the belly of it, just to see that vaste play of lite…
