Tom Kundig’s work explores the relationship of habitation with the natural world using man-made materials and transforming the roughness and rigidity of “steel and concrete into rich tactile experiences”.  Tom Kundig: Houses 2 features 17 residential projects, each with a particular sensitivity to its location, dimensions and the material out of which it is made.  Partnering the site with his own conception of detail and material, Kundig designs architecture that is an honest reflection habitat.

In projects such as Art Stable in Seattle, WA, Kundig shows the design sensibility behind a space that can be acted upon by its inhabitants.  The physical attributes of the space changes to accommodate different activities depending on the people within the space.  It also requires strength to operate the various movements of the architecture. Rolling Huts, designed by Olson Sundberg Kundig Architects, also shows the flexibility and adaptability of the architecture by literally allowing it to migrate as its users see fit.  The slim profile of these homes and the delicate way in which they touch the ground is a reminder of the sensibility to nature and its preservation.  For more posts Tom Kundig’s projects click here.
