Kaplicky’s controversial Prague Library may get built

Mar 2009
Before Jan Kaplicky’s recent death, the controversial Prague National Library project by Future Systems was supposed to be shelved forever. However, there are rumors now saying it may get built, thanks to a popular Facebook group supporting the project.
Maybe the Prague National Library will be finished by Amanda Lavete, who recently announced the formation of her new office, Amanda Lavete Architects. This new practice follows the end of Levete’s 20 year partnership with Jan Kaplicky at the influential Future Systems.
You can see the Facebook group here (it’s in czech though).

uuugh! the ugly green monster !
I dont think so.
Before dying he went mad…
pooh! HIDEOUS.
Where are the intentions here? where is the respect for the context or which is the position of the proyect with the place?
FANTASTIC
ARE YOU KIDDING ME
fantasticly HORRIFIC odris, its foul… maybe fun it for a theme park, kids entertainment, but a serious piece in Prague?? it would be seriously upsetting if this was built.
Simon, we don’t have a concept statement here, and I’m too busy to find one, but I think this project might be about the lack of respect for the context. I like that thought actually.
Actually, I read the description on the FUTURE SYSTEMS site, and the form is in reference to Baroque architecture in Prague. Haha.
It looks like Godzilla spat on the floor…
Come on!
library… no way
maybe it looks good
in Disney land
and what about the colors??
Очень не нравится. Б-р-р-р.
It is not like.
I can’t see that looking good anywhere….
build it. Everyone will love it in 50 years
I like this!!! :)
without this kind of building world would be borring….
well guys, everybody can have their own opinion on this project, but that´s not what is controversial or scandalous about it. the thing is that this is a winner of an internation competition, which had about 700 participants, it was chosen by a regular jury (zaha was a member for example) and was supposed to be realized as such. the scandal is what happened afterwards… the intervention of the politicians who slowly burried this whole project with lousy excuses and dirty methods…
for all the people saying it looks ugly i have one question… Are you Zaha Hadid fans?
Looking at the sections, the building seems quite exciting, and makes for interesting spaces.
architecture’s concern shouldn’t be whether it looks good or not.
“However, there are rumors now saying it may get built, thanks to a popular Facebook group supporting the project.”
Another reason to hate Facebook.
