In June 2010, PTW Architects won a limited competition among five Australian practices for a complex mixed-used project in the heart of Sydney’s central business and retail district. On a complex consolidated site within the CBD of Sydney, the project is positioned between two heritage buildings on George Street and occupying the depth of a city block, the project also includes the restoration of two heritage listed buildings on the site, facing York Street. A development application was lodged in December 2010 and has just been approved by Sydney City Council.More images and architects’ description after the break.
Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) announced the beginning of construction of the CityCenterDC development by Hines|Archstone in downtown Washington, DC. A new mixed-use development located on the 10-acre site of the former convention center, CityCenterDC is one of the largest downtown development projects currently underway in any U.S. city. Gustafson Guthrie Nichol participated in developing the master plan for the site with lead architect Foster + Partners, and acted as lead landscape architect, working with DC-based Lee and Associates. Additional members of the design team include DC-based Shalom Baranes Associates, serving as associate master plan architect, project Architect of Record, and lead designer of the residential rental buildings.
Construction commenced on March 23, 2011, and is expected to reach completion by the fourth quarter of 2013. The project includes the development of Northwest Park, a lively addition to downtown DC, the creation of a Central Plaza, as well as dramatic terraces with green roofs and gardens incorporated into all the buildings. Croatian architects 3LHD shared with us their project Green Pavilion Restaurant, for which they received first prize in an invited competition during last year. More images and architect’s description after the break.
The new cultural and service center designed by Yaniv Pardo Architects re-shapes the town square while creating commercial spaces, residential units and a concert hall. It provides Holon, Israel with an activated space for culture, leisure and commerce through a diverse range of service that will provide for a variety of activities.

Chad Mitchell, president of Denver based Meridian 105 Architecture, has shared with us his proposal for a planned mixed use complex in downtown Denver Colorado. JDS Architects together with KLAR,CREO ARKITEKTER A/S and Sloth-Møller engineers has presented us their latest project, the Faaborg Harbour Bath and Blue Bass in Faaborg, Denmark. This was the winning design among the invited entrants to the Faaborg compeition and the execution process is ongoing. Follow after the jump for a few additional images and a short project briefing.
Songdo International Business District (IBD) occupies over 1,500 acres of reclaimed land on the West Coast of Incheon, Korea. This waterfront master plan includes a diverse array of programmatic elements and is designed to be a pedestrian friendly city with walkable streets and an urban density that allows for an active street life. Signature features include, the New Songdo City First World Towers, Northeast Asia Trade Tower, the 100-arce Songdo Central Park, and the Songdo City International School.
