Architecture Classics: Colegio Mayor Argentino / Horacio Baliero + Carmen Córdova

Being a reference in the Argentine Modern Movement, the Colegio Mayor Argentino Nuestra Señora de Luján (CMANSL) is located in the University City of Madrid, Spain. Designed by Horacio Baliero and Carmen Córdova, with the collaboration of Javier Feduchi as the works director and Jesús García Vela as the clerk of works, the building emerged as a result of the competition called by the Ministry of Culture and Education of the Argentine Republic in September 1963. Inaugurated in 1971, it represents an example of modern and organic architecture that, based on a traditional construction system, is capable of addressing the functional and expressive needs of a modern 20th-century building, adapting to the surrounding environment where it stands.

Architectural Classics: Cementerio Parque in Mar del Plata / Horacio Baliero + Carmen Córdova

Mar del Plata is an obligatory reference to the Modern Movement in Argentina. Not only for being the scene of some architectural classics such as the House on the River, the Parador Ariston, or the Terrace Palace but also for the Cementerio Parque designed by Horacio Bucho Baliero and Carmen Córdova in the 1960s.

My decision to study architecture was a naive one, made after having taken several vocational tests I found on Google. When I found out it was one of the toughest courses in Brazilian public universities, I thought about giving up. But I was already hooked by the history of architecture and its social role.

However, nothing is perfect. Architecture and Urban Planning is one of the most elite courses in the most renowned Brazilian universities, something that is reflected outside of the classroom as well. The architects went on to serve the rich, casting aside the needs of the cities and the poor.
