Pasarelas San Borja is an international architecture and landscape ideas competition. It seeks to recognize—through a qualified, representative jury accredited by the sponsors—the best urban design ideas that contribute to defining intervention criteria and generating proposals for the recovery of the Pasarelas San Borja in Santiago, Chile.

The competition is open and international. Multidisciplinary professional teams (Chilean or international) may be formed, consisting of architects, landscape architects, civil engineers, and other professionals or specialists relevant to the proposed project. Professional teams must include at least one architect and one non-architect. International professionals or firms must partner with an architect licensed to practice in Chile.

2019 has been a very fruitful year in architecture, unveiling projects, discourses, and careers that cover most of the multiple layers, interest, and fields related to this discipline, and highlighting how relevant it has become to our societies —from the Pritzker Prize 2019 awarded to Japanese architect Arata Isozaki to the revealed theme of the Venice Biennale 2020. On the occasion of the recent XXI Chilean Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, the curatorial team consisting of Beatriz Coeffé, Juan Pablo Urrutia, Vesna Obilinovic, Tomás Villalón, and Joaquín González spoke with Chilean architect Enrique Walker. An academic and former director of the Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design program at Columbia GSAPP from 2008 to 2018, Walker has explored throughout his career an interest in the everyday in architecture.

On the occasion of the third edition of the EA USS Workshop, of which ArchDaily is a media partner, Ernesto Silva, Director of the School of Architecture at Universidad San Sebastián, reflects on the origins of this initiative, which held its first session in 2016 with the international participation of Juan Herreros, and a year later with Alberto Veiga, founding partner of Estudio Barozzi Veiga.

During a meeting with Juan Herreros in 2015, the idea of hosting a workshop in Chile first emerged. While initially it seemed like an extremely difficult initiative to realize, the project soon began to take shape after Enrique Walker joined the conversation. The workshop finally came to fruition in October 2016 thanks to the support and generosity of the Faculty of Architecture at Universidad San Sebastián, when Juan Herreros and Enrique Walker led the first workshop of this series at EAUSS: Typological Corrections.
