The biggest sporting showdown of the world, Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games 2016, will commence in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil from August 5. Around 10,000 participants from 204 nations are expected to descend in Brazil, unleashing fierce competition and rivalries.

It is going to be a make or break event for the city of Rio de Janeiro, which has got the privilege of being the first South American city ever to host the Olympics games. It is estimated that around half a million fans and supporters are expected to grace the event in Rio, making it hard for the city officials to control the proceedings.

Re-thinking The Future (RTF) was born from the idea of creating a new window on international trends in architecture and design that looks on to radical solutions for the present day problems facing the domain. RTF is a hub of services for architecture and design. RTF is working to develop an architectural language that would ‘sustain’ and ‘survive’ the impacts of new age challenges, and evolve into an architectural language of the future - taking sustainability one step ahead. This year RTF is presenting ‘RTF Sustainability Awards 2016’ to give voice to architects, designers, planners and students from all over the world and discovering a new talent.

The mission of the American Architecture Prize is to advance the appreciation of quality architectural design worldwide. Celebrating creativity and innovation in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design, AAP is open to submissions on a global level, accepting entries from architects all around the world.

Winners are selected by our esteemed jury of architects and leaders in the architecture world, and will receive the AAP trophy, extensive publicity showcasing their designs to a worldwide audience, and more.

Through interdisciplinary master class studios the CAFx SUMMER SCHOOL explores relationships of architecture and film during eleven days in August 2016. Six upcoming architects and filmmakers under 40 years old will co-teach three thought provoking master class studios in Aarhus. The architects and filmmakers have been selected by an international jury on the basis of their recent submissions to the Future Architecture submissions (see here).

Moscow's Strelka Institute has launched a series scholarships that will cover expenses for its first joint master’s programme with the HSE Graduate School of Urbanism, called ‘Advanced Urban Design’. Devnya Cement AD, a member of Italcementi Group, and Varna Design Forum invite all students of architecture and design, and all young professionals up to 35 years old from all over the world to participate in the international contest for conceptual design of a small trading pavilion, to be situated in the Seaside Park in the city of Varna. The goal is to enrich the urban design of Varna through the realization of a contemporary and inspiring concept for a trading pavilion constructed with the innovative materials of Italcementi Group. The contest will finish with the announcement of a winner selected by a five-member Jury Panel. The winner will be awarded with monetary prize, visit to the "i.lab" research center in Italy and realization of their project as a real-size prototype.

The overriding purpose of this proposed monument is to honor and express deep gratitude for the millions of Americans and Vietnamese who fought side-by-side to stop communist aggression and give the South Vietnamese people a chance to live in freedom. To give meaning to this difficult struggle, it is important for many of the Vietnamese people who fled their country and escaped communist persecution, to show their appreciation to those that helped them during and after the war.

Edmonton’s Infill Design Competition is an opportunity to encourage productive conversations about infill and help the public and development community understand what’s possible for infill design. The competition should demonstrate that infill can augment, rather than detract from the character of our established neighbourhoods. The City of Edmonton is excited to promote and celebrate innovation, context sensitive design, and advance the design ethic for infill development in Edmonton.

The Lighting Architecture Movement Project, aka LAMP, is an international juried design challenge open to all ages and creative backgrounds. The theme for the fourth annual competition is “Cosmic” – the best representations of which will be featured in a special exhibition in Vancouver, launching in November.

The Tamayouz Excellence Award, the Iraqi Architecture Prize, is delighted to Launch Tamayouz International 2016 – an open international Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Graduation Projects, open to final year architecture and architecture design technology graduating in the academic year 2015/2016 worldwide.

2016 marks the fifth edition of UIA-HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design, the sole annual international architecture competition for students in Mainland China that receives the support of Union International des Architects (UIA). It is a platform for global architecture students to approach the theme “Architecture in Transformation”, and for the rest of the world to check out the latest trend of Chinese architectural education. The jury members include the leading architects, deans and directors from top architecture schools. With its challenging topics, prestigious jury panel as well as professional operation, UIA-HYP Cup competition has grown to become a major student competition in China and its global profile continues to rise.
