The Glasgow Institute of Architects, as Trustees for the Alexander Thomson Scholarship, are pleased to announce the launch of the Legacy Essay Writing Competition. The competition marks the bi-centenary of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson’s birth and celebrates how the architect used critical writing as a tool to disseminate ideas.
In our fifth Haitian adventure, we will be working in groups to intensively learn a design methodology, software tools, and use this to propose an efficient, iconic bamboo structure. In the later 2/3 of the course, we will build one design as one group, and the construction will act as a catalyst for participants to learn about bamboo: joints; species selection; treatment; taxonomy; cutting; and propagation.
Research shows that sea levels around the world have been rising for many decades due to global warming. The consequences of this will put hundreds of cities at risk of being flooded. Similarly, water levels in the Mamori Lake vary greatly between the dry and wet season, when the river can grow up to 14 meters flooding the forest and changing the physiognomy of the land. Currently, local houses are built on stilts to deal with tidal variations but in recent years, this has not always been enough to prevent the river from causing devastation.

After the great success of last year’s Summer School in Aarhus, we are hosting another summer camp this year in Lemvig under the title “Landscape as Character.”
The CAFx Summer School 2017 will focus on the temporal nature and character of the Danish landscape. With reference to the 17 UN goals for a better world, we will shed light on the future, present, and past of the magnificent sceneries that make up Western Jutland.
This international architectural idea competition invites all architecture students, young architects, and professionals related to architecture studies to develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a Micro House. The competition seeks the creation of a Micro House with ideas and concepts in architectural design with site planning. Micro houses are the focal point in a broader system to address issues, concerns, and problems of the current day.

UIA HYP Cup 2017 International Student Competition in Architectural Design
Architecture in Transformation should respond to contemporary challenges and changes. What concerns us primarily is the relationship between architecture and environment, so as to the image of city. The competition aims at searching and constructing human space with a Spirit of Place in the increasingly fragmented cities and unordered villages, exploring environment-friendly and sustainable ideas in the information age, and integrating creative concepts with solid basic skills in architectural design. The competition requires the participants to make detailed insights and reflections on architectural history, explore complicated coordinated demands of architecture and environment, pay attention to events in specific sites, and configure viable urban and architectural spaces.
Tamayouz Excellence Award is delighted to invite students of Architecture / Urban / Architecture Technology / Landscape Design worldwide to register and submit their Graduation Projects. An independent international jury will review all entries and will select the winners of Tamayouz International Award 2017. The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence celebrates urban places that are distinguished by quality design and their social and economic contributions to our nation’s cities. Winners offer creative placemaking solutions that transcend the boundaries between architecture, urban design and planning and showcase innovative thinking about American cities.
One Gold Medal of $50,000 and four Silver Medals of $10,000 will be awarded. Projects must be a real place, not just a plan or a program, and be located in the 48 contiguous United States.
The Biodesign competition is a a two week long sprint, seeking bold and innovative visions for the future of construction at the intersection of the physical, the digital and the biological.
We seek radical visions for the following categories:
A. Spaces for living – Single family home in the suburbs – Multi-family apartment in the city – Informal settlement or slums in the context of an emerging economy – In situ revitalization of abandoned buildings in the context of cities with declining population.
B. Spaces for learning or healing – Visions for primary or secondary schools – Novel typologies for wellness institutes.
In late August, the Flanders Architecture Institute will organise Encounters in Optimism: Utopia in a Finite World, an interactive programme of lectures, debates and workshops that will take place in various national pavilions at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The overarching theme is "the architectural utopia in a finite world."
Together with The British Council, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and the Creative Industries Fund NL, the Flanders Architecture Institute has put together a programme for architects, students and the general public to reflect on how architecture can redefine the city. The economic climate and the idea of utopia are the main topics in these discussions.

PASSIONS: An International Photography Competition Official Call for Entries
Organized by Magic Always Happens, PASSIONS benefits autism research and action, and is a juried award and exhibit to be shown at Unarthodox in New York City later this year. Drawing from the wildly different interests that captivate us, our passions provide a view into not only how differently each of us can experience the world, but how uniquely we can all craft or change it for the better.
Progeny is an International Collaborative Project, featuring the work of Luke Aaron Clark (UK) and Bryce Hammond (USA). The exhibition focuses on an immersive architectural sound installation modeled after a Langstroth Beehive. There are ten partitions covered in acoustic paneling, with 48 microphones, 9 intelligent microphones and 36 speakers that transmit every single sound originated in the space.
