Through elements that once served a functional purpose in architecture—such as door frames, scaffolding, wheelbarrows, planters, or chairs—Colombian artist Sebastián Dávila assigns them a sculptural use, transmuting this obsolescence into the foundation for creating new scaled spatialities in cast concrete. In conversation with ArchDaily, the artist, sculptor, and near-architect explains how merging art and architecture transcends the stereotomic quality of concrete-generated space.

Brick is one of the most widely used materials in Colombia, helping local architecture stand out globally. This prominence is due to the exceptional quality of the clay found in several regions of the country. Beyond cladding the majority of the buildings that define Bogotá's urban landscape, the material is used in all its forms, from adobe to floor tiles in rural homes.

In Bogotá, the mayor's office has launched an initiative to build seven public Happiness Centers (CEFE), where residents of each sector of the city will have access to cultural spaces, Olympic and recreational pools, gyms, and leisure areas. The competitions have been managed through the Colombian Association of Architects (SCA). The CEFE Chapinero—named after the locality where it will be built—will be located in the El Retiro neighborhood.

A total of 1,598 legally practicing architects in Colombia participated in the study titled “Characterization Study of the Colombian Architect,” developed by the National Professional Council of Architecture and its Auxiliary Professions (CPNAA).
