Designing Nusantara: The Making of Indonesia's New Capital

What does it take to design a capital city for a culturally diverse nation from the ground up? This book offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Nusantara, the new capital of Indonesia, told through the eyes of the lead designer from its earllest conception to its current development.
Moving beyond public headlines, the narrative traces the transformation of Nusantara from its first conceptual sketches to monumental realization of foundations being laid on site. Readers are invited to unpack the intricate urban vision and complex planning processes that have defined this “Forest City.” The book documents the technical milestones and early implementation challenges faced when designing at a national scale-a process where environmental resiliency, cultural identity, and bold national ambitions meet.
Featuring a foreword by the world-renowned urbanist Jon Lang, the text provides essential context for how high-level design decisions are made in a rapidly evolving landscape. Whether you are a professional architect, an urban planning student, or a member of the general public curious about Indonesia’s future, this book provides the definitive insider’s perspective on the birth of a 21st-century capital. It is a compelling exploration of a city designed to be a global benchmark for sustainable urbanism.

Open Call for Artist Participation in the 19th Istanbul Biennial

The open call for the 19th Istanbul Biennial aims to deepen a particular line of research within the Biennial's broader conceptual framework. In their invitation text to artists, the curators state: "Art cannot end wars or resolve their underlying causes, but it can open spaces for dissent, doubt, and the imagination of alternatives. Looking at war through art carries a historical responsibility, as well as a practical value, since it can keep in view what official accounts leave out. By setting individual recollections aside—and at times against—the memories that communities and states construct, artists can open up nuanced ways of thinking about life under extreme conditions, and about the questions of courage, complicity, ethics, and endurance that war raises." Restoring Views at Neutra’s Corwin House with Sky-Frame

About an hour's drive from New York, the Corwin House sits in hilly woodland high above the Saugatuck River. Completed by Richard Neutra in 1956, it is one of only three houses the architect built in Connecticut. Architectural designer Aziz Osko has updated the house, revisiting details from Neutra's original design that were never built.

The commission began when Betty and Henry Corwin asked Neutra whether he could recommend an East Coast architect working in a similar style. Neutra was so taken with the wooded site above the river that he took on the commission himself.

Critical Regionalism Abroad: Aris Konstantinidis without Greece

Since the 1980s, critical regionalism has been globally celebrated for imbuing modern architecture with local sensibilities. After rising to international stardom, however, several critical regionalists soon began to erect distinctive albeit “placeless” buildings around the world. This book examines how Aris Konstantinidis (1913–1993), a Greek architect less well known outside his home country, instead propagated his vision of regional modernism to global audiences on his own terms through his publishing and teaching beyond national borders.

What Should Exterior Insulation Do Beyond Thermal Performance?

The buildings and construction sector accounts for around 39% of global CO₂ emissions and nearly 50 per cent of global material extraction. Operational carbon emissions which are associated with the energy consumed to run the buildings also rose by 1% to 9.9 billion tonnes of CO₂ in 2024, even as building energy use intensity (EUI) has improved. These figures point to persistent gaps in the way buildings are designed, constructed and upgraded. One important area for closing those gaps is the building envelope insulation, which remains central to controlling energy demand, improving thermal resilience and reducing carbon emissions.

Typological Drift: Emerging Cities in China

Typological Drift: Emerging Cities in China documents the impact of the Chinese culture on the development of city types in China in the past four decades, leading to surprising urban realities that often escape normative urban theories. Result of a decade of research by Shiqiao Li and Esther Lorenz in the two large city-regions in China, the Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta, this book offers frameworks of understanding of China’s urban realities from within Chinese thought and language. The book uses the concept of drift, which parallels one of the four rudimentary patterns of biological change: mutation, adaptation, migration, and drift. Drift of phenotypes takes place when chance events randomly terminate some features and allow other features to flourish in ways that are unrelated to other patterns. In the past four decades, the Chinese culture has exerted a set of forces that may be seen to have functioned as “unexpected events” in the normative processes of urban change. Three main “drift triggers” – ten thousand things, figuration, and group action – frame the book in theory and empirical examination. The book concludes with a reflection on the state of China’s architectural profession which is deployed as the frontline of China’s urbanization. Through thirteen case studies, the book reveals, how a thing-based conception of quantity, an unwavering enthusiasm for figuration, and the instinct for group action have given rise to distinctive Chinese urban formations.
