Humanist modernity: Maciej and Stanisława Nowicki opens in New York

On October 1, the exhibition Humanist modernity: Maciej and Stanisława Nowicki, opens in the Center for Architecture in New York. Alongside the opening, the Center will host a public talk and a guided tour led by the exhibition's curator, Kacper Kępiński, Deputy Director of NIAiU.
Humanist modernity presents the work of Stanisława Sandecka-Nowicka and Maciej (Matthew) Nowicki, two significant figures in the history of American and Polish architecture. The exhibition takes its title from a concept the two architects developed in the 1940s: modernism as a human-centered approach to design, concerned with understanding who a building is really for and how it binds a person to the space around them. It follows this idea across their work and asks what their architecture offers us today.

Using shipping containers as the basis for a structure—also known as "cargotecture"—seems like a simple approach to building. Perhaps deceptively so. While it's true that containers are a quick, cost-effective, and often low-effort building material, and that they're durable and customizable, container conversions also bring their challenges. Without careful planning, the build process can be painful and the results underwhelming.

To understand whether containers are the right choice for a construction project, it's important to look past their industrial allure to the realities and constraints of steel boxes as a building material.

From Desert Heat to Northern Winters: How Container Architecture Adapts Across the United States

Far from simply transporting goods from A to B, shipping containers have become a go-to building material across the US, forming the basis of everything from tiny homes to container pools, site offices to workshops. But given the size of the country, and the range of climates found within its borders, the approach to container architecture can vary significantly from state to state, even county to county.

A container conversion in the desert Southwest faces very different conditions from one in New England, while projects along the Gulf Coast must account for humidity, storms, and salt air. These regional differences can influence everything from insulation and ventilation to roofing, foundations, and exterior protection. Let's take a closer look at these regional approaches, the local climate challenges to consider before a build, and the adaptations that can address them.

Elements Pavilions

For this year's Copenhagen Architecture Biennial we are looking for two distinct pavilions, urging you to build with fire, water, earth and air - letting the world in instead of shutting it out. Leaving behind dreams of mastery over heat, earth, air and water we follow commonly felt desires for friction and ask what designing from dependence and connection might entail. In a time of warming, droughts and technological illusions of a frictionless escape into the cloud.
