This is an original, miscellaneous, rich, and distinct book that offers the reader an uncommon journey through an unconventional home, designed and built by Javier Carvajal—one of the great architects of the second half of the 20th century—in the mid-1960s in Somosaguas. The measure of the Casa Carvajal's uniqueness is evidenced by the fact that Carlos Saura used it as the setting for his film La madriguera—a telling title regarding the role assigned to the architecture—in which the house plays a part, silent yet omnipresent, with the force of another character in the drama.
We know that the world is changing, and this is a moment to reinvent ourselves in the face of an unprecedented situation. The health crisis has compelled us to transform the way we live and interact today. Office work has been reinvented in response to the need for cultural and digital transformation. Consequently, millions of Mexicans are now working from home—an increasingly common practice that has tested our individual resilience, allowing us to adapt to this new way of working while balancing new responsibilities and activities that promote our performance and well-being.
Isolation viewed from different perspectives and disciplines: this is the central theme of the "Isolated Dialogues" series, organized by the Universidad Finis Terrae School of Architecture, which takes place every Wednesday. The event will be held virtually from August 14 to 16.

This allows us to invite architects from different parts of the world and make it possible for you to get to know them from the “AnA perspective”, no matter where you are located. The first round of events will take place before mid-July. Join us!

We are currently facing an unprecedented global challenge; it is the first time in history that humanity as a whole has seen its biological integrity threatened simultaneously, regardless of geographic, cultural, or technological differences. As we seek to overcome mounting economic difficulties, we face the monumental ethical challenge of how to move forward under the imperative of preserving life above all else.
The workshop will address this fundamental question through the potential of architectural and urban design. It is a call to action and reflection for a radical improvement of current urban space conditions, especially in environments most vulnerable to the risks of COVID-19. This emergency research and design agenda is aimed at creating alternatives for the current built environment through low-cost response devices capable of addressing infrastructural needs with minimal resources.
