As in global politics, the history of architecture has often treated refugees as mere human surplus. Consequently, conventional architectural histories have largely limited themselves to echoing the nation-state’s exclusion of refugees as people out of place. This book examines several often-overlooked yet critical intersections between mass population displacement and architecture, tracing a trajectory from the 19th and 20th centuries to the present day. By identifying the refugee as the central collective political subject of our time, this study seeks to initiate a history of refugee architecture that bridges the gap between architectural history and the study of displacement.

Somatic space and multiple bodies reveal a place from which architectures and landscapes emerge. An architectural environment that exists within us. This architecture aspires to be made of the same matter shared by bodies, vital impulse, or the planet.

As turbulence of every kind increasingly defines our contemporary climate, there is a growing focus on a handful of attitudes and works that, throughout the 20th century, cultivated the poetics of silence and were able to interpret the chaotic and elusive reality of our era through it. These pages are dedicated to unraveling some of the keys to this alternative sensibility.

If we can distinguish between near and far, sharp and blurry, foreground and background, we can Focus. By prioritizing, categorizing, organizing, and balancing, we can Compose. By drawing with light, concealing with shadow, and saturating and texturing the subject, we can Illuminate. By understanding the situation, tracking movements, positions, and paths, and waiting for the exact moment, we can Capture. The sum of these five actions results in a great photograph.

The primary objective of this course is to equip students with fundamental concepts and powerful tools for developing projects that involve structural engineering, including buildings, residential housing, industrial facilities, and soil feasibility. By the end of the course, students will be able to navigate the variables involved in including, removing, or modifying structural elements through an examination of structural philosophy, the state of the art, national and international regulations, and plan review.

The Consulate General of Peru in Rio de Janeiro, the Instituto Cervantes of Rio de Janeiro, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru present the exhibition Toro itinerante de Pucará (Pucará Traveling Bull), a showcase featuring the finest ceramic works of the “Toro de Pucará.” This mythical figure, which represents southern Peru and is recognized as a national cultural heritage, has been touring the world since 2021, visiting all five continents. This collaboration between the Instituto Cervantes of Rio de Janeiro and the Consulate General of Peru in Rio de Janeiro further demonstrates the strong relationship of friendship and cooperation between the Institute and the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its embassies and consulates abroad.

We invite individuals interested in deepening their study of architecture through a historical-critical lens, and who hold a university degree, to participate in the program. All are eligible to apply for the two partial scholarships to be awarded in the 2025 edition.
