The 8th edition of the ArchDaily Brasil Building of the Year award has arrived, and once again we need your help to select the best architectural projects of the year. By voting, you become part of an unbiased network of jurors recognizing the most relevant projects published last year.

Under the theme “It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities,” the 12th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) will be held in Cairo, Egypt, from November 4 to 8, 2024. The conference returns to the African continent more than 20 years after its inaugural edition in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2002.

Convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and co-organized with the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the event is the premier global conference on the future of cities. The sessions will take place at the Egypt International Exhibition Center and will be broadcast online for free.

We invite you to participate in the 2024 ArchDaily Brasil Building of the Year Award. In its eighth edition, we task our readers with the responsibility of recognizing and rewarding the projects that have had the greatest impact on the profession. By voting for the finalists, you become part of an unbiased network of jurors recognizing the most relevant projects built over the past year in Portuguese-speaking countries. Only a few days remain before the voting stage closes, which will select the three main winners of the 2024 ArchDaily Brasil Building of the Year Award from among the 15 finalists.

Registered users can vote for their favorite project once a day. The voting stage closes on April 3 at 11:59 PM (Brasília time GMT-3).

Casa da Arquitectura has opened a call for 10 doctoral research fellowships, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the Cooperation Protocol for the Funding of the Multiannual Plan for Doctoral Research Fellowships established between both institutions.

We are pleased to present the finalist projects of the 2024 ArchDaily Brasil Building of the Year Award. After two weeks of nominations, the favorite projects were chosen from hundreds of built works in Portuguese-speaking countries. Our jury, composed of thousands of readers, has once again done an excellent job of selecting these 15 works.

From today until April 3 at 11:59 PM (Brasilia time, GMT-3), you can vote once a day for the projects you consider to be the best examples of contemporary Lusophone architecture. The results will be announced on April 4.

Last week, we announced the 15 finalists for the 2024 ArchDaily Brasil Building of the Year Award, which celebrates the best of Lusophone architecture, inviting our readers to choose their favorite projects built in Portuguese-speaking countries. The day has come to announce the winners of ODA 2024.

The 2024 Building of the Year Award is presented by Dornbracht, an internationally renowned brand specialized in kitchen and bathroom products.

The Tomie Ohtake Institute and AkzoNobel have just released experimental videos about the three winning projects in the Professional category of the 9th Tomie Ohtake AkzoNobel Architecture Prize. The films feature Casarão 28, the Quebradeiras de Babaçu Reference Center, and the São Benedito Route.

Who do you design a city for? Your answer is unlikely to focus on a baby or a child under the age of six—the age bracket that defines early childhood. Yet, a wide range of guidelines and actions can be taken to integrate this demographic into urban planning. After all, this is when a citizen's first interactions with urban life begin, making it essential to provide the most welcoming environment possible. 

At one of Bolivia's most important architecture events, a Brazilian project took home the top prize. Sesc Parque Dom Pedro II, designed by the firm UNA Arquitetos under the coordination of Fernanda Barbara and Fabio Valentim, won the International Project category of the International Architecture Biennial of Santa Cruz 2022 (VIII BASC), held between March 25 and April 3 of this year.

The seven main representative entities of Brazilian architects and urban planners, members of the Board of Architecture and Urbanism Entities (CEAU), launched the Open Letter to Candidates in the 2022 elections. Featuring 20 proposals, the document aims to address structural issues, economic and social development policies, and territorial planning in the country.

The National Congress will officially discuss the proposal for the Professional Microentrepreneur (MEP), a tax category that would reduce taxes paid by architects, urban planners, and other independent professionals. The proposal, drafted by CAU in partnership with the Board of National Entities of Architects and Urban Planners (CEAU), was introduced by Federal Deputy Érica Kokay in the Chamber of Deputies as Supplementary Bill No. 55/2022.

The 29 de Março community, in the Cidade Industrial de Curitiba (CIC), was one of two Brazilian regions selected by the Action Fund Brazil to receive investments to combat climate inequality. Ambiens Sociedade Cooperativa, a local cooperative, was responsible for the project — a 15-month initiative in one of the city's most vulnerable neighborhoods. The other project was implemented in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.

Dating back to 1535, the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Igarassu, Pernambuco, is considered the oldest surviving church in Brazil. This iconic landmark has recently undergone an extensive restoration that preserves its historic features while introducing upgrades to facilitate its contemporary use. The intervention also included the adjacent two-story Parish House.

"Agostinho de Freitas was an extraordinary artist," says Agnaldo Farias, art critic, professor, and curator of the exhibition “Agostinho Batista de Freitas – Mestre das Ruas,” on view from May 12 to June 11 at Galeria Estação in São Paulo. The exhibition features a selection of about 20 of the artist's canvases from the collection of gallerist Vilma Eid.

The 13th edition of the Architecture Biennial, organized by IAB-São Paulo, will open on May 27. It emerges from a reality of intense transformations brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide, which demanded major efforts to reorganize urban, social, and professional dynamics for survival. 

Travessias (Crossings), the theme of this edition, recognizes that the pandemic reinforces socio-spatial inequalities that were already established, not only in Brazil but globally, understanding that these structures undergo physical and symbolic fragmentations rooted in violent processes of colonization and historical erasure. As a result, they trigger numerous manifestations of oppression – such as racism, sexism, ableism, and coloniality – in Brazil and other territories. 

In May, the same month that the 13th São Paulo International Architecture Biennale begins, SescTV will make five selected episodes from two series—Arquiteturas and Coleções - Mestres da Arquitetura—available on-demand on the channel's website. These episodes prompt a reflection on architectural and historical heritage and depict the vision of architects and other professionals in the field, offering different perspectives on several iconic projects. All of this content, along with other programming spanning various artistic expressions, is part of the channel's collection and is available on-demand on the SescTV website.
