Jonite offers contemporary engineered stonework solutions that merge natural aesthetics with high-performance functionality for modern architectural and landscape designs. At Yale-NUS College in Singapore, Jonite collaborated on custom stone seating integrated into the campus landscape.
Situated beside the National University of Singapore’s University Town, Yale-NUS College is a liberal arts campus designed to encourage collaboration, community, and environmental responsibility. Completed in 2015 and jointly designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and Forum Architects, the project received Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum Award, with courtyards, roof gardens, and pedestrian routes forming a connected public realm.
In line with the campus’s environmental approach, Jonite developed a series of wall-mounted benches fabricated from reinforced stone panels originally designed as tree grates. Reimagined as sculptural seating, these elements provide durable rest points while visually linking green courtyards, rooftop terraces, and circulation areas. The perforated stone surfaces introduce lightness and pattern, complementing adjacent planting and paving.
The engineered stone system offers strength, slip resistance, and dimensional stability, enabling flexible placement across varied settings—from stair landings and sky gardens to shaded niches. The adaptation demonstrates how standard components can be repurposed to meet design and sustainability objectives while maintaining a cohesive campus identity.
