Characteristics
High-quality wood, maximum transparency, huge range of RAL colours, varnish shades and oiled finishes
Solarlux, a family-owned leader in innovative glazing solutions, has delivered award-winning, precision-engineered window and facade systems for over 40 years—seamlessly connecting indoors and out. Solarlux's Woodline bi-folding doors were used in the Buitenplaats Koningsweg, located in Arnheim, Netherlands.
A Historic Site Reimagined
Once a concealed WWII German military base, Buitenplaats Koningsweg near Arnhem has been reborn as a thoughtfully designed residential and cultural enclave on the edge of the Veluwe National Park. Since 2010, MVRDV, Buro Harro, and KondorWessels Projecten have led the transformation with a master plan that honors the site's layered past. Lost structures were rebuilt in light grey tones to distinguish them as new, while original buildings feature dark grey accents that signal modern interventions, allowing history to remain unhidden.

Sustainable Homes in a Forest Setting
The final phase introduces three rows of sustainably built terraced houses positioned precisely where army barracks once stood. Set apart in a beech forest, these homes echo the scale and rhythm of their predecessors. Paved surfaces give way to shared green space, fences are replaced with forest paths, and the homes, elevated slightly on plinths, appear to hover above the forest floor. Designed without private gardens, they encourage a communal, nature-first lifestyle where architecture blends into its surroundings.
Bi-Folding Doors That Connect Indoors and Out
To enhance the connection between indoors and out, each home is equipped with Solarlux’s Woodline bi-folding glass doors. These 2.70-metre-high, barrier-free systems span up to five metres wide when opened, allowing residents to fully dissolve the boundary between their living space and the surrounding forest. Crafted from FSC® and PEFC-certified laminated meranti wood, the doors align perfectly with the project’s sustainability goals. Their sleek, nearly invisible technology delivers exceptional thermal insulation and soundproofing while blending harmoniously with the timber-framed construction, bringing natural light, openness, and material honesty into every home.
