More about this product

LONGOTON® tiles are a rear-ventilated ceramic panel with rainscreen coating produced by MOEDING, a German company specializing in brick tile facades. The defining property of these tiles is the possibility to extend them up to 3,000 mm in length and to adapt them to non-flat facades. The Fontenay Hotel in Hamburg applied these tiles to the covers of their floor slabs, around the flowy, wavy profile of the building. Designed by Störmer Murphy and Partners, the sculptural, eight-story tower takes its shape from three circles that form the ground plan.

The hotel is on the banks of the Außenalster lake, surrounded by green, with a shape that has no back or front facade. This singular facade is structured into horizontal strips of glass and the customized LONGOTON® reflective ceramic panels finished in glossy white.

The building has two courtyards at its center that give every side of the facade natural light. The top and bottom floors have distinguishing programs, with wellness and restaurant facilities at the top and two pools on the 6th floor with wavy views of Alster Lake.

Fontenay facade

The curved facade was segmented into horizontal bands with floor-to-ceiling glass surfaces, separated on each floor by the large tiles, formed individually in eight different radii, each individually adapted to the building. The radii went from 1,500 mm to 2200 mm, with a final surface of 1,200 m2 of white-glazed LONGOTON.

Their production required a specially developed manufacturing process by MOEDING, with exact radii to guarantee clean transitions. The lower side of each panel was made of lasered sheets.

The LONGOTON® brick tile is characterized by its flexibility in shape and length, which can reach up to 3,000 mm. This brick tile was introduced into the market in 2001, as a response to the demand for long-format ceramic tiles.

The facade system offers:

  • long-lasting materials
  • natural resources
  • efficient production
  • economical development through fast and efficient installation
  • high individuality due to large design option potential
  • energy efficient
  • low maintenance
