ALPHATON® clay tiles are the signature product of the German manufacturer MOEDING, which specializes in ceramic facades. ALPHATON® tiles are modular rear-ventilated bricks with rainscreen cladding, adjustable to different environmental conditions, and resistant to all weather. This thermal power plant in Leipzig applied them to their existing buildings as part of a refurbishment and repurposing project, where the plant has been adapted for renewable energy, unlike its previous use as a coal-fired plant.
The plant is expected to transition from coal to thermal energy and finally to hydrogen in the future. The colors of its facade contrast with the surroundings to enable its becoming an icon of the area, which is mostly residential. The power plant building, the pump hall and the gas plant building each have a clinker base and an adjoining ceramic facade, structured with the MOEDING technology for ALPHATON® tiles. Their colors are brighter reinterpretations of the existing building’s original colors.
The Leipzig Süd thermal power plant consists of the power plant building, the supply building, and a pump hall, supplemented by a heat storage facility.
The ALPHATON® brick, introduced to the market by MOEDING in 2001, is a rectangular tile meant for uniform facade coverage.

The extruded ALPHATON® brick slabs are made from predominantly native clays and are fully colored. Due to the very high firing temperatures and the long firing time, intensive colors and the best strength values are achieved. The brick slabs are double-shelled and 30 mm thick. The breaking loads of ALPHATON® panels are many times higher than those of single-skin panels. The tiles are resistant to weather stressors and their structure can be adapted for diverse climates, to facilitate ventilation or insulation as needed.
Construction started in the summer of 2020. In October 2023, the ceramic facades by MOEDING had been successfully installed on the site.
