Modular Skylights in Utopia Library | VELUX Commercial

With a vibrant and light aesthetic, the name Utopia is a fitting for this city library located in Belgium. In 2018, the group KAAN Architecten transformed the former military school structure into a contemporary library and performance arts academy through a unique approach to the traditional library typology. In collaboration with Dutch window company VELUX, the building was renovated into a natural and inviting public space.

Design Concept

KAAN Architecten chose modern materials such as raw concrete, light filled walls and roof to create a relaxing feeling inside the spaces. To connect the library, rehearsal studios, auditorium, and teaching areas, a network of VELUX skylights were installed for a continuous look. As an added benefit, the VELUX Skylights provide fresh indoor air ventilation. Thus, the 64 Atrium Longlight skylight panels form a striking and extensive glass roof network.
