Morin Corporation specializes in roll forming of architectural heavy gauge single skin metal wall and roof systems. The design for this MTA tower in the heart of NYC was designed to be eye catching, clean and memorable using metal sheets with folded ends.
The idea was to utilize the brand colors of the MTA and to clad the tower making it visually appealing for the neighborhood it serves. The project appears as a nearly seamless multi-color metal cube and utilizes a technique called 'Swedged’ overlap ends. This technique adds a dynamic stability across the flat surface.
The designers were seeking a sharp modulated metal panel solution and Morin was able to provide this by recommending the use of a heavier gauge in shorter length panels. It was suggested for these large flat panels to utilize a slightly heavier gauge metal to minimize any potential for shadows as the metal naturally expands and contracts.
By alternating colors the architect was also able to create an eye catching effect which draws the tower in to the community. The installation was such that it appears to be seamless and without any obvious joints or fixings
