Milan Design Week rarely fails to deliver on compelling showcases of design and innovation.
One of the exhibitions this year, created by Swatchbox, conveys the “true cost” of traditional approaches to construction. The sample platform founded by architects to provide sustainable sampling methods to the design community launched its thought-provoking showcase at the heart of the Brera Design District in Milan.
The exhibit boldly confronts the issue of wastefulness inherent in traditional construction practices. Installed inside an office in Brera that is ordinarily occupied by a Milan architecture firm, the exhibit displays a large pile of construction materials typically destined for landfill. The materials are meticulously arranged to showcase the sheer volume of waste generated by the design community.
The book presents the remarkable history of the emergence in the past two decades of a dramatically new design of multi-tower and multi-functional tall building clusters. Based upon a decade of architectural research, the book provides a definition of the new typology, here termed The Tower Cluster, and its major concepts, design characteristics, and the typological knowledge required to design creative sub-variants. It provides the detailed analysis of a large series of outstanding recent case studies of the typology.

Like many small residential practices Cohen & Hacker Architects have made a career of doing house additions. In a practice spanning almost forty years they have evolved strategies for making additions that represent both a theoretical and philosophical position about altering older buildings. They believe that recycling existing houses, retrofitting them to meet new energy standards, preserving their embodied energy as well as their cultural significance is the most sustainable way to practice architecture.

Through “Re/Creation,” Lasvit —a leader in hand-made glassmaking—sets up a sanctuary for creative escapism amid the hustle and bustle of Milan’s Salone Week. In the serene embrace of Palazzo Isimbardi, “Re/Creation” offers a space where minds are free to wander, inspired by the fluid grace of molten glass. The title refers to the innovative technique of fused glass, where the essence of fused glass lies in letting go. Extremely hot melted glass is allowed to relax, spread and take shape of a form designed for the glass to lie on. Its own weight and gravity take care of the rest. Similarly, a creative mind is most prolific and innovative when relaxed, free of everyday pressures and demands. This is why, at the beautiful location of Palazzo Isimbardi, Lasvit creates a haven for creatives to escape, recharge and relax.

The architectural festival Open House Slovenia will open doors to new and renovated architectural projects, as well as important cultural heritage buildings throughout Slovenia, from April 12 to 14, marking its fifteenth year. The purpose of the festival, throughout its years, has remained true to its basic mission—to raise awareness among the general public about the values of well-designed spaces and to present examples of the best practices in contemporary architectural production as part of Slovenian culture and national identity. Through personal experiences in quality architecture, the festival enables a broader understanding of architecture and designed spaces, highlighting their importance for quality living. Experts in the field of architecture and design, Blaž Budja, Maša Cvetko, Dean Lah, and Maja Stamenković comprised a professional jury that selected this year's festival programme from the submitted projects. During the festival, visitors will have the opportunity to explore more than 70 projects across the entire country. They will be able to visit private apartments, single-family houses, renovations, educational and cultural institutions, as well as business and tourist facilities. In Ljubljana, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the residential neighbourhood Dolgi Most II, social housing Rakova Jelša II, community centre Golovec, and the Biotechnology Hub of the National Institute of Biology. The doors will also be open at the Nuclear Reactor Institute Jožef Stefan – TRIGA. As part of the festival, visitors will also have the opportunity to see the projects Bohinj Kindergarten and the Covering of the Remains of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Žiče Charterhouse and Temporary Lapidary, which were shortlisted for the EU Mies Award 2024. In alignment with the Open House Europe cooperation project, the festival adopts the theme "Architecture of New Opportunities," focusing on promoting inclusivity for all individuals and interest groups within built and designed spaces. It addresses questions of equal opportunities and new possibilities for living, working, education, living, and development of the entire society, all living beings, and nature with the aim of seeking answers about coexistence that good architecture can enable, promote, and protect. In the festival programme, various thematic projects will be highlighted, promoting accessibility and enabling community development. The festival will also feature thematic tours and workshops targeting different audience groups. The entire programme of the Open House Slovenia 2024 festival is published on the Open House Slovenia website. Registrations for tours and guided visits are mandatory. Visitors can sign up for tours on the website from April 3, 2024, onwards. Open House Slovenia is part of Open House Europe, a cooperation project co-funded by the European Union.
