Architecture is a privileged tool for brands that are characterized by a high-end positioning and that, beyond the quality of their own products, needs to feed an imaginary of prestige, style, and refinement. From the showrooms to the stores, fashion needs architects as much as stylists, photographers and modelers.

Emerging dynamics: Architecture in the face of the complexity paradigm / David Obon

Above all, this book is an invitation. An invitation to discover a new way of seeing and thinking about the world, which in turn entails a new way of seeing and thinking about architecture. Drawing on complexity science and Edgar Morin’s complex thought, David Obon opens the door to knowledge that transcends disciplinary boundaries. It is a form of knowledge capable of recognizing the multidimensionality of our discipline—a knowledge that does not simplify, but rather reconnects, articulates, and clarifies. It is a knowledge that speaks to us of order and disorder, but above all, of creation. These insights have germinated across multiple disciplines to construct a new emerging paradigm: the paradigm of complexity.

Kurandza: a Learning Center in Mozambique

Archstorming’s new competition takes us to Mozambique, a country marked by a great number of long-lasting challenges. Although there has been a substantive increase in the household income, over two-thirds of the population still live below the poverty line.
This Sub-Saharan Africa country is ranked 139th out of 159 countries on the UNDP’s Gender Inequality Index. Women are exposed to threats of diseases, discrimination and violence.
Around 94% of girls in Mozambique enroll in primary school, but despite this high number, only 11% of girls continue to study in secondary schools. As girls grow older, they are met by an increasing domestic workload and more responsibilities. Many girls have no choice but to stay at home to do chores or work to help their families. Teen pregnancies prove to be a major reason for girls dropping out of school early. 30 to 40 percent of girls are pregnant before they turn 18 years old. Taking care of a child, working and performing household chores can be overbearing and leave these girls no time for school.

Writing Competition KVDF 2022

The intention of the Kurula Varkey Design Forum has been to curate discussions centered around the thoughts of students and young graduates. It has constantly tried to bring the agency which students hold, to forefront; to provide a platform for students to display their opinions to the profession they’ll be entering soon. Writing becomes a tool to examine one’s own thoughts; at the same time it provides an important platform to express one’s voice to a larger community. Eager to provide a podium for contemplation and expression in the field of architecture, we’re pleased to announce ‘KVDF Writing Competition 2022’, for students of architecture, planning, design, and other associated fields to put down their ideas and opinions through persuasive, inspiring, and influential writing.

CARAVANSERAI SUMMER SCHOOL: Ecological Restoration of Rural Architecture

After the pandemic and empowered by the climate crisis, a new wave of natural living style far away from the overpopulated cities raised all around the world and generated a return to the countryside, giving a new hope to the rural areas. Following the participative restoration philosophy of Depo Pergamon Workshops, the Caravanserai Summer School 2022 will promote a new model of ecological restoration for rural architecture based on a circular sustainable principle: Sun, Water, Soil, Straw, Dung, and Wood. These natural materials will be used for reviving the vernacular construction techniques in the restoration and renovation of the mud plaster surfaces and the rammed earth pavements of an old architecture complex to be reuse as a new generation caravanserai, a worldwide forgotten typology during the XXI century. To complete the conservation of the preexisting buildings, the original wooden flooring, ceilings and furniture will also be restored. All the work will be led by experts in vernacular architecture and building techniques.
