Barry Sampson, Baird Sampson Neuert Architects, George Baird Lecture

The lecture will briefly explore five questions that highlight the work of the architectural firm founded by George Baird in the late 60's. Renamed Baird Sampson Architects when Barry Sampson became a partner in 1981 and Baird Sampson Neuert architects, when Jon Neuert became a principal in 1998, the firm has been in continuous practice for half a century. Each question encapsulates concerns pertinent to the evolution of the firm's interests and challenges over the decades.

This Friday, March 8, there will be a series of Debates with free entry and with the presence of the guests of the 2nd Edition of the Month of Architecture of Maia that hosts the exhibition "Fast Forward", which will be patent up to March 31, curated by the architect Andreia Garcia (Atelier Andreia Garcia Architectural Affairs).

If starchitecture isn’t dead, then it has surely been rendered irrelevant in a world struggling to provide decent living conditions to at least a quarter of the world’s population. A growing network of architects and urban planners are busy tackling the challenges posed by realities like unprecedented urban growth, climate change and conflict as opportunities to build a more just and sustainable future. As such, resilience, sustainable urban development, the effects of mass migration on cities, community participation, post-disaster response and disaster risk reduction are key issues within our master program that deserve a spotlight beyond the classroom and that today, more than ever, resonate with urban practitioners and the general public.

Generazione: a Call From Rome

The series will start next Friday, and the lectures will be every month up to June 2017 in Rome, at Casa dell’Architettura.
The participants - all born in the Eighties - will be paired in couples, in order to obtain an interesting dialogue in each and every meeting.

The UMN School of Architecture Fall 2016 Lecture Series brings together a range of leading architects, designers, historians, and theorists whose work, research and writings are actively reshaping the discourse of architecture and the ways in which it is taught, contextualized, practiced, and constructed. These lectures will present their current bodies of work and research through unique lenses guiding their own design practices and pedagogy.

Encounters in Optimism: Utopia in a Finite World

In late August, the Flanders Architecture Institute will organise Encounters in Optimism: Utopia in a Finite World, an interactive programme of lectures, debates and workshops that will take place in various national pavilions at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The overarching theme is "the architectural utopia in a finite world."

Together with The British Council, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and the Creative Industries Fund NL, the Flanders Architecture Institute has put together a programme for architects, students and the general public to reflect on how architecture can redefine the city. The economic climate and the idea of utopia are the main topics in these discussions.

Lecture Series: UMN Catalyst Week 2016

Architecture as Catalyst is an annual week-long event, bringing new ideas, conversations, and expertise to the school by inviting guests from around the world to run experimental workshops with graduate students and give public lectures on their work. Each year, the week before spring break, first and second year graduate architecture students engage with the guests and host faculty in intensive five-day workshops, each focused around a unique set of ideas and techniques.
