Urban regions are catalysts of change. They foster pragmatic politics that enables more progressive governance. “Progress,” however, has to contend with histories and structures that grew from exclusionary logic, uneven development, and the systematic exploitation of labor. Progress does not happen on its own; it emerges from the continued efforts of activists, engaged citizens, intellectuals, and professionals that strive for a more just city. It requires developing common platforms to facilitate the conflicts that inevitably come with differences. Spaces of Struggle is about creating spaces that harness differences and transforms them into momentum for progressive change.

After recently organizing an artist residency, Paesaggi Migranti / Migrant Landscapes is hosting an international workshop taking place later in May in Pennabilli, a small town of an Italian dreamscape.

It’s LIQUID Group, in collaboration with Ca’ Zanardi, is pleased to announce the open call for ANIMA MUNDI 2017, the International Art Festival. ANIMA MUNDI festival, curated by Luca Curci and Andrea Chinellato, will be presented in Venice at Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi and other prestigious venues and historical buildings, in the months between May and November 2017, in the same period of the 57th Venice Art Biennale, titled VIVA ARTE VIVA, curated by Christine Macel and organized by La Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, hosted at the Giardini and the Arsenale venues.

The international contest is open to students, graduates and experts and its aim is to imagine and design possible scenarios of the city of the future: How will smart and sharing cities look like in the future? How are these changes going to impact on people’s lives in cities?

The way we spend time and the things we spend time doing are constantly changing. New technologies enable us to interact in different ways. They also tend to replace older forms of social interaction for better or worse. How can future public spaces facilitate new forms of social interactions?

For years people have presaged the game-changing aspects of Virtual Reality in the field of architecture. The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) announces the launch of its very first Hong Kong Young Architects & Designers Competition. Envisaged to provide a platform for emerging architects and designers to showcase their creativity and potential, as well as gain valuable experience, the competition invites young professionals to participate in an innovative challenge to design a Temporary Pavilion, to be built inside the Nursery Park at the West Kowloon Cultural District.

The call for 'An Idea for a Future London’ is open to all kinds of practitioners (including, but not limited to, artists, designers, architects, planners, creative technologists, filmmakers, writers or social entrepreneurs) and projects.

We want to understand how people are operating, or speculating on how, to create positive change in the city and to support a project which will communicate new ways of working to our visitors and communities.

The Open Call will award the winner a budget and support to deliver a project which will inhabit the Museum of London’s City Gallery between February and April 2018. Alongside the realisation of the winning proposal, we will make public a selected longlist of creative ideas for urban change – a valuable mapping of a shared field of possibility.

Archtalent, an online architecture platform for Architects, in collaboration with Sziget, one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe, make an international call to design a temporary structure within the particular context of a music festival in the city of Budapest in Hungary.

From June 5–16, 2017, the Department of Design Research, Writing and Criticism at the School of Visual Arts will host its annual two-week intensive dedicated to researching and writing about design. This richly programmed course equips students with techniques for constructing compelling narratives about images, objects, cities, and spaces under the guidance of esteemed writers and editors, such as Magic and Loss: The Internet as Art author and media critic Virginia Heffernan; architecture writer and critic Karrie Jacobs; author, critic, and The Weeklings co-founder Jennifer Kabat; BBC interviewer and Design Observer contributor Adam Harrison Levy; The New York Times culture reporter Robin Pogrebin; author and playwright Craig Taylor; and design and business columnist Rob Walker.

INDESEM (International Design Seminar) is a biennale, founded by a group of students in 1962. The seminar was born from a desire to experiment with architecture and urban planning, while exploring beyond the boundaries of the curriculum. For this week the 80 participating students embark on a design project accompanied by lectures and discussions with renowned architects and theorists. InDeSem provides an environment in which students, architects, planners, designers and theorists engage in conversation and discussion about the current and future position of the architect, designer and planner within society.

The Society of Architectural Historians is now accepting abstracts for its 71st Annual International Conference in Saint Paul, MN, April 18­–22. Please submit an abstract no later than 5:00 p.m. CDT on June 15, 2017, to one of the 45 thematic sessions, the Graduate Student Lightning Talks or the open sessions. The thematic sessions have been selected to cover topics across all time periods and architectural styles. SAH encourages submissions from architectural, landscape, and urban historians; museum curators; preservationists; independent scholars; architects; scholars in related fields; and members of SAH chapters and partner organizations.

CHART ARCHITECTURE competition, a key element of CHART SOCIAL, was launched in 2014 to promote young Nordic architects and explore the crossover between art and architecture. In 2017 CHART is extending the call for applications to young and newly established architectural practices, as well as welcoming students and recent graduates from the Nordic architecture schools.
