International Conference: Built Heritage & Light

The two-day international conference »Built Heritage & Light« will take place on Thursday, 28th and Friday 29th November, 2019 at the Faculty of Architecture and Design, Wismar University of Applied Sciences, Technology, Business and Design. Experts from the fields of monument conservation, lighting design, architecture and architectural history will discuss the lighting of built heritage monuments and sites from different perspectives.

The conference aims to raise awareness of the challenges posed when illuminating built heritage and to discuss central questions on the subject in an interdisciplinary exchange. Can the general principles for the conservation of monuments, as set out in the Venice Charter, also be applied to the lighting of built heritage? Are there conditions under which the use of artificial light is forbidden? How should the conflict between the preservation of the original lighting situation and current lighting requirements be dealt with? The aim is to identify areas of concern and develop maxims for action as a methodical aid to orientation for all involved in lighting planning in the context of built heritage. Workshop discussions in small rounds and a moderated panel discussion will support the discourse.

The »Light & Built Heritage« conference will take place in the Hanseatic City of Wismar on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The historic old town of Wismar was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2002. Wismar began to bloom in the late Middle Ages, as evidenced by many historic buildings in the old town and the grand red brick Gothic churches.

Organised by Jan Blieske, Professor for Lighting Applications in Architecture, and Dr.-Ing. Arnd Hennemeyer, Professor for World Heritage Studies.
