Exhibition: Sergei Tchoban Architectural Drawings

In his first solo exhibition in the United States, Sergei's 18 works on paper reveal his memories in Russia. The themes span monuments, fantastical scenes of Berlin, cities under water, exceptional sections and compositions of historical and contemporary architecture.

Over the days, months, and years Sergei Tchoban has created a prodigious and immense body of work encompassing architectural drawings in all its aspirations, forms, and mediums. As an architect, the translation of idea to physical manifestation originates with, and is traditionally expressed with pencil and paper, the drawing, and yet, for Sergei, this mode of communication differs from his personal collection of drawings: his architectural fantasies, which for him are complete autonomous works of art that are both the beginning and end of the architectural idea.

Some of Sergei’s drawings focus on contemporary architecture in the already existing historical surrounding, others are incredibly detailed dynamic compositions and evoke a range of emotions. For example, a selection of the drawings on display portrays a historical period through the eyes of a traveler, in which old, alluring, grand, and majestic cities are being flooded during the leadership of Joseph Stalin. The traveler represents and annotates this in their composed notes – an imaginative diary.

The architect’s passion for drawing began during his education at the Repin Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in St Petersburg, where he was born and raised. Sergei Tchoban lives and works in Moscow and Berlin, where in 2013 he designed and founded the Museum for Architectural Drawing.
