Foreword by Glenn Murcutt

“For the past five years I had the good fortune of teaching a few weeks a year in the Pacific Northwest at the University of Washington in Seattle. During each visit, I made time for travel to many parts of the state, including the San Juan islands, which string down the West Coast, and the superb mountains of the Cascades, as well as the nearby active volcanoes. I visited the incredible ancient forest of the Olympic Peninsula adjacent to the dynamic coastline and the drier region of the Palous whit its more extreme climate from summer to winter. The topography and landscapes of these regions vary enormously: to the west, with parts in a “rain shadow”; the craggy, high, mountainous regions to the north capture the winter snows that begin to melt in spring and fill the creeks and rivers; to the east, the climate is drier, with a topography of beautiful undulating hills that support the grasslands and farming. This is the Pacific Northwest I know the best. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson has undertaken many commissions here, as well as in other extraordinary landscapes throughout North America. (…)”
