On June 17, 2017, a massive wildfire broke out in Pedrógão Grande and spread through the forest to Figueiró dos Vinhos, Castanheira de Pêra, Sertã, Penela, Góis, and Pampilhosa da Serra, damaging around 500 homes (259 of which were primary residences). Sixty-four people lost their lives while trying to escape the fires.
