The municipality of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, capital of the state of Chiapas, is a relatively young city with a population of under 600,000 inhabitants distributed over an urban area of less than 90 km². Its climate is extreme, characterized by heavy rains in the middle of the year and an average temperature of nearly 30 °C (86 °F). The topography is marked by natural contrasts, bordered to the north by the Sumidero Canyon National Park and to the south by the Mactumatzá and El Zapotal hills—ecosystems that shelter rich biodiversity and define the city's linear growth along an east-west axis. This urban corridor can be traveled from end to end in less than 40 minutes along its main avenues.
