
Structural design is predicated on ensuring the stability of a proposed building based on the chosen materials and construction techniques. To do so, calculations must account for different types of loads, such as the self-weight of the materials, the building's use, and its occupancy patterns, which are classified as either variable or permanent.
Structural analysis is a fundamental phase of building design. The architectural design establishes the foundation from which civil engineers work to determine the structural elements required to support and stabilize the building. To accomplish this, various types of loads are evaluated, which were recently revised and reorganized in NBR 6120 in 2019. The previous version of this standard dated back to 1980 and contained significant gaps resulting from shifts in lifestyle and occupancy habits over the last few decades.
