Nature-based solutions (NBS) have become widely recognized as efficient approaches for adapting cities to the climate crisis and mitigating increasingly frequent disasters. Projects such as rain gardens, linear parks, hillside restoration, and urban agriculture help make cities more resilient to extreme weather events, while generating additional benefits for society, the economy, and the environment.
In Brazil, landslides, waterlogging, and flooding challenge urban centers and disproportionately impact the poorest and most vulnerable populations. Nature-based solutions and the development of public policies to promote them have made progress in some cities. For most municipalities, however, NBS remain a novel concept.
