With every fraction of a degree of global warming, the impacts of climate change become more intense. In the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), 278 scientists from 65 countries demonstrate that to keep the 1.5°C limit established by the Paris Agreement within reach, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must peak within the next three years.
Following two previous reports focused on the physical science of climate change and its impacts, the new Working Group III report focuses primarily on mitigation—in other words, reducing GHG emissions and removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. By analyzing more than 18,000 studies published since the release of the Fifth Assessment Report in 2014, the world’s leading climate scientists have identified pathways to limit global warming to 1.5°C, among other temperature thresholds, while also assessing the feasibility, effectiveness, and co-benefits of various mitigation strategies.
