Last week, we announced the 15 finalists for the 2020 Obra do Ano, an award celebrating the best of Lusophone architecture by inviting our readers to choose their favorite projects built in Portuguese-speaking countries. Today, it is time to reveal the winners of ODA 2020.
This year, first place went to SESC Birigui, designed by Teuba Arquitetura e Urbanismo. Second place went to the Romanesque Interpretation Center, designed by the Portuguese office spaceworkers, while third place went to the Beacon School, a project jointly developed by Andrade Morettin Arquitetos and GOAA - Gusmão Otero Arquitetos Associados.
See more details about the winners below.
First Place: SESC Birigui / Teuba Arquitetura e Urbanismo

The architectural proposal sought integration into the city's urban fabric, not only through its massing, but also by respecting the watercourse that crosses the site, which is culverted in this stretch. We placed the uncovered multi-sports court over the culverted section, bounding this area with two footbridges that cross and define the stream's “valley” as a large void. This architectural proposition aims to suggest that, in the future, all the stream's banks can be recovered, creating a linear park with gardens. – Teuba Arquitetura e Urbanismo

Second Place: Romanesque Interpretation Center / spaceworkers

Located in the Porto District, in the town of Lousada, the intervention area is situated in an expansion zone of this town, on a plot marked by a strong relationship with an urban square, Praça das Pocinhas, as well as with the Senhor dos Aflitos Church, a landmark element with a strong presence in the town center. The intervention thus aims to create a frontage facing the square and to balance the ensemble of Senhor dos Aflitos Church - Square - Interpretation Center, so that it also becomes a landmark element for this town center. –spaceworkers

Third Place: Beacon School / Andrade Morettin Arquitetos + GOAA - Gusmão Otero Arquitetos Associados

The project for Beacon School stems from the combination of an innovative pedagogical project with built heritage in a former industrial neighborhood in the central area of São Paulo. [...] The proposal is based on the idea of taking full advantage of this built heritage and, using this monumental structure as a starting point, introducing new elements capable of accommodating the school's specific activities and, simultaneously, introducing the appropriate scale and fitting finishing materials in order to domesticate the space. – Andrade Morettin Arquitetos + GOAA - Gusmão Otero Arquitetos Associados
