Fernando de La Carrera: "The design process is always driven by the anecdotes that inspire"

The student collective Post_Arq from the Leopoldo Rother Architecture Museum at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia has shared with us their interview with Fernando de la Carrera. This conversation is part of a series featuring seven Colombian architects, including figures such as Sebastián Serna, Santiago Pradilla, Leonardo Álvarez Yepes, and Lorenzo Castro, among others, whose interviews will be published on their YouTube channel.

Text description provided by the collective. Located in northern Bogotá, the studio of architect Fernando de la Carrera served as the setting for our dialogue and exchange of ideas. With his characteristic warmth and energy, he spoke about the architects and works that move him most, while sharing his perspective on today's massive volume of architectural production.

An alumnus of the Universidad de los Andes—where he has also taught since 2002—he has won the BCAU (Colombian Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism) for Casa El Arrayán and the Dicken Castro Award for the Stage II renovation of the Gold Museum. During our talk, he explained why he views practicing architecture as a craft, emphasizing the importance of experiencing architectural space firsthand and understanding materials through the lens of craftsmanship. Additionally, he highlighted his interest in the development of the contemporary city and the transformations it requires.
