Workshop series brings technical assistance knowledge to Brazilian states

To expand the Technical Assistance Network for Housing Improvements initiated in São Paulo during the Hands-on Program in Technical Assistance for Social Interest Housing (ATHIS), the non-governmental organization Soluções Urbanas is promoting the Technical Assistance for Housing Improvements Workshop across several Brazilian states. The workshop will be led by Architect and Urban Planner Mariana Estevão.

The goal is to train Networked Family Architects as a strategy to connect professionals in environments that foster the exchange of experiences. Simultaneously, the initiative seeks to engage with professional associations and other sectors of the construction supply chain to create opportunities for implementing ATHIS, focusing on housing improvements as a viable professional practice.

Throughout March and April, the workshop will travel to five Brazilian states. The first event will take place in Rio de Janeiro on March 23. The other dates are: Porto Alegre on March 30; Belo Horizonte on April 13; São Paulo, across two sessions, on April 23 and 24; and Curitiba on April 27. The workshops will be held on Saturdays, except for São Paulo, which will be divided into two weekday evening sessions.

This first eight-hour module of the workshop introduces participants to ATHIS guidelines through the experience of the Family Architect (Arquiteto de Família) project and simulates individual consultations with families served by ATHIS. The simulation aims to help participants understand the socio-environmental complexities faced by families in situations of social vulnerability, preparing professionals to meet the real needs of this public in the future by creating solutions that go beyond architectural design.

The second module, which has no scheduled start date yet, will address strategies for beginning work in a territory and potential collective solutions to enable construction work and ensure project sustainability based on available resources.

The full cost of the course is BRL 500, with installment options and early-bird discounts. Registration can be completed via WhatsApp at +55 (11) 97230-1531. Inquiries and further details about the workshop can also be addressed through this number.

The workshop is based on the methodology of the Family Architect project, which features a rapid cycle of diagnosis, project development, and construction supervision, making technical assistance more accessible.

Family Architect is a social technology certified by the Fundação Banco do Brasil and awarded in 2013 by Finep (Brazilian Innovation Agency). Its approach follows the Family Health Strategy, with professionals working permanently within the same territory, influencing the culture of self-construction, and raising awareness among the population about the need to invest in housing improvements.

Between 2009 and 2016, Soluções Urbanas worked with families in Morro Vital Brasil in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Since 2008, the organization has been active in Greater São Paulo, having recently launched the Family Architect Project in Jardim Oratório, Mauá, São Paulo, in coordination with the local Basic Health Unit.
