Argentine Students Win Ideas Competition for a Pavilion in London's Hyde Park

After receiving 94 proposals from 29 different countries, the Hyde Park Music Pavilion (HPMP) international ideas competition, organized by arquideas, has announced the winning projects. Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in London, England, and one of the city's nine Royal Parks, three of which form a chain from the entrance of Kensington Palace, through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, to Buckingham Palace.

The competition sought proposals for a cultural space linked to music, providing information about past and future concerts in Hyde Park. "A cultural space where nature and the world of music play a leading role," the competition brief explained.

The jury comprised John Enright, Ana D’Apuzzo, Alejandro Beals, Loreto Lyon, Soffia Botteri, Patricio Connell, and Paulina Peña. Following an initial evaluation phase, which highlighted 15 proposals as competition finalists, a second evaluation round was required to ultimately select the 5 honorable mentions and the 3 winning proposals.

These are the winning projects of the competition:

Jury Report [Excerpt]: Although not entirely effective in its attempt to create a performative space, the Jury notes that the way a large intervention space is proposed through the repetition of relatively small and specific components is highly interesting. The tower itself is highly detailed, and its construction is feasible. It fits into the tradition of pavilions within the park, such as Follies and Grottos.

Second Place / Johnny Jeong Yeob Kim + Dominik Reisach
Technical University of Munich, Germany

Jury Report [Excerpt]: The Jury members highlight the project for being radically different. It provides a highly innovative architectural response to a brief that sought a seductive and dynamic design for a music pavilion. The structure was meant to complement the landscape while enriching Hyde Park's cultural offerings with an informal space for musical activities and events.

First Place / Juan Verdaguer + Ismael Preti + Carlos Brizuela
National University of La Plata, Argentina

Jury Report [Excerpt]: A beautiful minimalist proposal that catches the eye at first glance. Supported by a highly clear narrative presentation and explanatory text, its powerful imagery and well-structured proposal indicate great architectural and artistic sensitivity.

The Jury values how the building itself becomes, through the use of sound, an instrument for perceiving its location. It is a poetic way of revealing less visible landscape components, such as the wind or the movement of people. Its construction is fairly simple yet effective, an important aspect to consider when designing an ephemeral structure like a pavilion.
