Vitrina: A New Exhibition Space Opens Its Doors in Mexico City

Description courtesy of the project team:

Located in the heart of this neighborhood, at Marsella #59, Vitrina was born from the desire to create a design-focused exhibition space that goes beyond commercial interests. Inspired by the window displays of early 20th-century department stores, the space fosters a dialogue between designers, pedestrians, and the neighborhood, exploring recent trends in the design scene and how each creator expresses their vision.

Vitrina features a 1.60m x 3.60m street-facing window and a 35-square-meter area enclosed by a 2.30m-high curtain, designed to serve as a transitional space between the street and the interior, design and the user, the pedestrian and the city. Every six weeks, the work of two designers or collectives will be presented to foster a dialogue or conceptual confrontation.

Each edition will bring together two designers or collectives from different design fields—such as fashion, industrial, jewelry, and interior design. The venue will present the exhibition in a sequential format:

Street presence - lights on, curtain closed, space closed - two weeks

Pedestrian window - lights on, curtain open, space closed - one week

Open showcase - lights on, curtain open, space open - one weekend

Twice a year, during cultural events, the space will be guest-intervened on a non-profit basis by creators within the fields of design and art.

For this first edition, Sofía Ordaz, through her brand Serpentine, presents the Vilma necklaces. These subtle chokers, featuring large mineral spheres, adorn the necks of others. Stone and silver unite; ornament and word find expression.

In contrast, La Metropolitana presents a series of furniture from their classic collections, modified with brass elements that replicate the literal silhouettes of Serpentine’s jewelry; as the scale shifts, so does the perception.
