With 333 registered teams from 180 schools of Architecture and Urbanism representing 24 Brazilian states, the results of the 11th edition of the Competition for Architecture Students, organized by the Brazilian Center for Steel Construction (CBCA), were announced on August 22. For the 2018 edition, the proposed theme was a Pavilion with a Greenhouse for a Botanical Park.
The jury was composed of engineer João Alberto Vendramini (Vice President of Relations at ABECE – Brazilian Association of Engineering and Structural Consulting), architect Marco Peixe (Director at IAB – Institute of Architects of Brazil), architect Marcelo Barbosa (Jury President and Vice President of AsBEA – Brazilian Association of Architecture Firms), engineer Rosane Bevilaqua (CBCA Consultant), and architect Carolina Fonseca (Executive Manager of CBCA).
Initially, all proposals were briefly analyzed to, according to the jury, "understand the context of the finalist proposals in order to obtain a general comparative overview and make a referenced evaluation. A balance was noted in the presentation and graphic quality of the submissions. All teams presented consistent proposals and managed to communicate them clearly." [1] Subsequently, each proposal was reviewed in detail, debating design relevance; 11 were shortlisted, and ultimately, three stood out as winners, while another two received honorable mentions. The first-place winner will represent Brazil in the 11th ALACERO Steel Design Competition for Architecture Students 2018, organized by ALACERO – Latin American Steel Association.
