Seu Acervo, a platform for architecture final graduation projects, has released the results of the "Most Popular Project of 2017" open call, launched last November. The goal of the call is to expand the reach of the material available on the platform and encourage recent graduates to engage with digital publishing media.

The winners of this first edition of the award are Rogério Oliveira da Costa, from the Centro Universitário Belas Artes de São Paulo; Nayara de Paula, from the Universidade Anhembi Morumbi; and Hugo Rossini, from the Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie. See the winning projects below.

From the author: "Culture as an agent of spatial transformation. Located in Diadema, São Paulo—in the Grande ABC region—the Eldorado neighborhood increasingly supports and encourages cultural expression, manifestation, and production, embracing this as its identity for years, which has made it well-known for this quality throughout the city. Despite this, Eldorado still faces major challenges, such as dense irregular occupation in watershed areas, high levels of violence, a lack of urban planning, and a shortage of quality public spaces.
The result of these negative factors, in addition to the physical and environmental consequences for the neighborhood, is a lack of a sense of belonging among residents. Against this backdrop, culture, combined with architecture, offers a key strategy for the requalification of the informally occupied area along one of the branches of the Billings Reservoir. Reclaiming history, consolidating local identity, fostering public space experiences and sensations, and encouraging respect for nature are the core features of the CCED project. The proposal seeks an effective transformation of spatial and social conditions while strengthening human relationships and individual interaction with the neighborhood. Thus, the project serves as a key tool for local requalification, restoring a long-lost sense of ownership and belonging among the inhabitants."

Park School in Praia Grande, by Nayara da Silva Paula. Image via Seu Acervo

Name: Escola-Parque em Praia Grande
Author: Nayara da Silva Paula
Date: 2017

Institution: Universidade Anhembi Morumbi (UAM)

From the author: "The Praia Grande Park-School is located in a peripheral neighborhood of the city, occupying and environmentally reclaiming a 24,000-square-meter site surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, falling within the sustainable development boundaries specified by the local master plan. The project integrates, materializes, and improves a municipal program called SuperEscola, which has run in the city for three years. It offers a synthesis of the best developments in Brazilian educational history—ranging from the schools of Anísio Teixeira and Hélio Duarte, to CIEPs and CEUs, and incorporating Waldorf pedagogy and anthroposophical concepts. The goal is to impact not only its students but also the entire community and surrounding area through co-participatory initiatives. The educational complex consists of two buildings arranged around a large outdoor play area, designed for kindergarten and elementary school, and a third, larger building facing a lake that houses elementary and high school activities. The buildings are constructed from glued-laminated timber (glulam) sourced from reforested areas. The slabs, roofs, and floors are made of OSB panels. The overall massing is characterized by large eaves and balconies surrounding all classrooms, referencing local beach vernacular architecture and serving as an element of integration and continuity between the interior and exterior. The building envelope features sliding-pivot mashrabiya (muxarabi) doors. In addition to their strong aesthetic appeal, they allow for natural ventilation and daylighting, substantially improving energy efficiency while providing greater layout freedom and flexibility for users. All roofs are green, and a lake is designed to manage drainage and reclaim the site from erosion (as it is located in a flood-prone area). Complementary systems include solar power, rainwater harvesting cisterns, waste recycling, a community garden, and a composting system."

Desire in the city. The expression of public life in contemporary urban space, by Hugo Rossini. Image via Seu Acervo

Name: O desejo na cidade. A expressão da vida pública no espaço urbano contemporâneo
Author: Hugo Rossini Costa Longa
Date: 2016
Advisors: Maria Isabel Villac, Pedro Nosralla
Institution: Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (MACKENZIE)

From the author: "Located on the site of Parque Augusta, the project addresses the right to the city and the public use of its spaces through the lens of 'desire'. The pre-existing dynamics of the Baixo Augusta area inform the project's program, which aims to create a space of freedom that fosters encounters and hosts political and cultural discussions and demonstrations. Geared toward collectives, artists, students, and performing arts groups (music, dance, and theater), the program offers spaces for rehearsals, workshops, classes, and practice, alongside a large performance hall and a building with temporary housing for its users. The architectural concept is guided by the preservation of Parque Augusta's existing woodland and the historic portal of the former Des Oiseaux school. The proposed buildings occupy the edges of the site, freeing up the center for a large public plaza that provides access to both the wooded area and the buildings. The plaza is built over a large concrete slab that levels the site, allowing people to gather and move freely across its surface, with a public-access basement featuring a library, exhibition spaces, and a cinema."
