Guto Requena designs interactive installation for Sesc Avenida Paulista

Opened on April 29, Sesc Avenida Paulista featured an installation designed by architect and designer Guto Requena at its opening.

The project, titled Empatias Mapeadas, consists of an interactive parametric sculpture featuring pulsing lights and speakers that mix and broadcast the heartbeats of the participants who touch the piece.

Requena explains that the project's goal is, among other things, "to stimulate empathy between strangers through an immersive and interactive experience." According to him, "if we practice more empathy, we can move toward becoming a more egalitarian society. New digital technologies combined with art can assist us in this process."

Invited by Sesc, Requena says he is "honored to be part of something so grand and with such a significant contribution to the city." As a regular visitor to other Sesc locations, he notes that he is "happy to have been invited as an artist to inaugurate the new Sesc Avenida Paulista."

Empatias Mapeadas remains at Sesc Avenida Paulista until May 13.

Estudio Guto Requena has designed a new façade, which also doubles as an urban art intervention, for the Hotel WZ Jardins in São Paulo. Dubbed "The Light Creature," the 30-story facade is visible both during the day and at night, changing to interact with its surroundings and responding to stimuli like air quality and sound.
