Ten sustainable social housing projects from Chilean universities have qualified to be built for the third edition of the Construye Solar competition, and will be exhibited in Santiago in October 2019.
Organized by La Ruta Solar and sponsored by the Technological Center for Innovation in Construction (CTec), the Construye Solar initiative aims to "generate new capabilities within the sustainable construction sector in Latin America and raise public awareness of the economic, environmental, and social benefits offered by eco-friendly housing," as noted by the organizers.
At the event's launch last June, organizers revealed that Construye Solar 2019 will place a stronger emphasis on product development focused on innovation and industrialization, promoting the use of BIM methodology for designing the competing homes. Additionally, the participating projects—regardless of the university—must be designed to be located in Santiago, where technical measurements will be conducted in the final phase of the competition.
In addition, teams can choose between two urban housing typologies: an apartment unit with an interior area between 55 and 60 m², or a semi-detached (or row) house ranging from 42 to 60 m². In doing so, the organization aims to align the projects with the state subsidy of the Solidarity Fund for Housing Choice (DS 49) to facilitate replicability, while also addressing issues such as urban densification and residential energy efficiency.
The selected projects are:
- Casa Raíz / IDMA
- Casa Mercado / Universidad Mayor
- Proyecto Origen / Universidad Central
- Prototipo Cero / Universidad Católica del Maule
- Mamüll Ka Antu / Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción
- Proyecto Panal / Universidad Diego Portales
- Casa Tecno / Universidad de Santiago
- Casa Metamorfosis / Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María
- Edificio Modular 1030 / Universidad San Sebastián
- Convive 60 / Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana
Over the next ten months, the teams must bring their housing projects to life and build them for exhibition in October 2019 in a solar village that will be set up in O'Higgins Park, Santiago.
