Whitehaven Central Harbour Site Competition

© Brian Sherwen

Britain’s Energy Coast and Magnus Homes invite submissions to a two-stage, International Open Design Competition for a circa GBP £10m mixed-use development on a prominent site overlooking Whitehaven Harbour. The 2,600m2 [0.26Ha] site occupies a fantastic setting adjacent to Whitehaven Harbour and represents one of the most impressive current development opportunities in Cumbria.

Over the past decade, the former working port has been transformed into a thriving marina for leisure craft, with significant investment in associated public realm improvements. The redevelopment of the site presents an opportunity to continue this regeneration via the contribution of an active harbour frontage, with improved visual and pedestrian links to the town centre.

The design competition is open, but not limited to: architects, designers, artists, product designers, and related disciplines. The Architecture Foundation encourages design teams to suggest flexible and innovative yet realisable designs for this permanent structure. For more information, go to the competition’s official website. Seen at Death by Architecture.

Charlotte Wilson, recently graduated from Metropolitan University, shared with us her Final Major Project, which tells the story of ‘Women at War’, whilst dealing with the re-modelling and re-animation of a 1960s underground cold war bunker.

Situated within a unique cliff side location in Bempton lies the RAF Bempton bunker. Disintegrating and of great historical interest, it is proposed the site will be sensitively renovated and reclaimed.

Update: Serpentine Gallery Pavilion / Jean Nouvel

We shared the news of Jean Nouvel’s Serpentine Gallery with you as soon as it was completed at the beginning of July.  Today, we’re featuring Jonathan Glancey’s talk with Nouvel about his red ‘sun machine’, the 10th design to grace the Serpentine’s grounds. Nouvel describes the pavilion as a “simple place” that can accommodate the needs of its users, from providing a place to sit down to the amenities for a friendly game of ping-pong.

London Festival of Architecture

The Festival in 2010 will be a city-wide celebration of architecture in the capital. As gears up for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games we look at ways that planners, architects and local communities play their part in the development of ‘The Welcoming City’.

Everyone is invited to join the Festival community, to develop projects to take part in debates; to investigate ways that London can be made a better place to live, work and play; to explore the city through guided walks and bike rides and to examine change in the capital in a celebratory way.

A wide range of independent events will surround a number of core activities – some focused on high profile weekend events – others taking place throughout the Festival period. For a complete list of event, go to the festival’s official website.

The UK Architecture Students Self-Actuated Projects Conference

On June 24th the easaUK team, backed by SCHOSA, is hosting conference for students of architecture at the School of Architecture. The conference is a chance to return the energy generated by easa010 returning to the country that not only spawned it, but that also has a great, now lost, tradition of Winter Schools. The conference, organised and run by the easa010 team, is intended to spread the experience the team has gained over the last 2 years around institutions unable to be part of the European event, with the aim of creating a similar UK based event.

Talks will cover the history of Winter School and EASA, team building, fundraising, promotion and the media and legal considerations. All talks will draw directly from the experiences the team has gained from working on EASA, running smaller workshops and the easaHQ gallery. Delegates will have the chance to debate all topics and there is a provision in the timetable dedicated to networking, giving the delegates the opportunity to discuss future conferences and events.
