Event: Conscious Cities Conference

Conscious Cities is a one-day conference organised by MoA and THECUBE that aims to explore the relationship between neuroscience and architecture. By bringing together neuroscientists, architects, engineers, planners and developers, the conference aims to offer necessary tools for understanding how the built environment impacts our cognitive functions, while also showing how professionals can use research in neuroscience to design better spaces and cities for the future.

Exhibition: Finding Form

Finding Form is a co-show art event showcasing the works of Jeff Morrical, Jeff Guiducci & Carmelia Chiang, all working as architects in Los Angeles.

Morrical's work, The Folded Ocean, incorporates single sheet sculptures shaped by folds and gravity. Guiducci & Chiang's work, Tangential Mode, demonstrates the many possibilities of extraordinary form through the use of a most ordinary material - PVC piping.

The opening reception took place on Jan 23, 2016 and will be open to the public through Feb 13, 2016 at Design Matters Gallery in West Los Angeles. (11527 W. Pico Blvd).

Exhibition: A Look at the History and Restoration of Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat

Villa Tugendhat (1928–30) in the Czech Republic is the most well-preserved example of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s early functionalism. It is regarded as one of the world’s most important manifestations of villa architecture and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building also likely inspired the Norwegian architect Arne Korsmo’s work on Villa Stenersen (1937–39).

Call for Entries: The Site Gallery Design

This international one-stage architecture competition invites all architecture students, young architects and young professionals with a degree in architecture studies (≤ 40 years old) to develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a Site Gallery located near the River Tower (Torre do Rio) in the bank of the Guadiana River and adjacent to the fortified walls of the village of Mértola, Portugal.

Public Vote Selects A Collection Of 'Future Architecture' Ideas

The results of the 2015 Future Architecture Call for Ideas have been announced, "revealing the critical thinking of the currently emerging generation of designers and architects in relation to the existing models that shape architecture as a discipline." Submissions presented visions "of what architecture could be, and highlighted architects and designers as initiators of change in the larger societal picture." As the first pan-European platform of architecture museums, festivals and producers, it has been designed to both bring together ideas about the future of cities and architecture closer to the wider public.

Call for Proposals: The 2016 Fuller Challenge

The Buckminster Fuller Institue (BFI) has issued the Call for Proposals for the 2016 Fuller Challenge. Known as “socially-responsible design’s highest award,” the Fuller Challenge invites designers, architects, planners, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, activists, and students worldwide to submit original solutions to some of humanity’s most pressing problems.

A $100,000 prize is awarded to support the development and implementation of the winning project. In addition to the grand prize, BFI will provide further resources for finalists, semi-finalists and select entrants through its Catalyst Program.
