A second stage of development for the South Kilburn Masterplan is underway as plans submitted by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands and Alison Brooks Architects (ABA) were approved last week. The developments span a 2.09 hectare site in the London suburb of South Kilburn, replacing three existing isolated estates with 144 new dwellings.

The Wave in Vejle, Denmark designed by Henning Larsen Architects is a new unique housing that embraces the sculptural and organic forms to become a new landmark for the city. UArchitects has, in cooperation with LENS°ASS architecten from Hasselt , won a competition for a new school building The Bridge in Bocholt, Belgium. The special sustainable school is in the form of a circle in an effort to engage the neighborhood into the school with activities and possibilities of an extension.

The new headquarters building for the Guosen Securities Corporation in Shenzhen, China, is to be the new symbol for the dynamic corporation that needs to be energy efficient and a pleasurable working environment in the new century. The Guosen Securities Tower by MVRDV is a project driven by the creation of good views and direct daylight for every worker in a compact floor plan of 1849m2 where no workplace is further than 11 meters away from the façade. Stacking these floors leads to a 204 meter tall tower with a square floor plan and an elegant, slender volume.

In 2005, the Chinese government announced its target to reduce energy consumption per GDP unit by 20% by the year 2010. After a €300 billion investment over five years, that target has been reached. The Chinese Climate Protection Program laid out goals to increase energy efficiency, development of renewable energies and promotion of energy savings while reducing pollutant emissions and strengthening environmental protection. The “Future City” by SBA Design marks these achievments with a design that promises low-carbon, economic and energy design and manages to support the climate protection process efficiently.

This project by tvsdesign is an addition to and rehabilitation of Philadelphia’s historic 1893 Reading Train Shed. As the centerpiece of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the terminal building, Grand Hall, meeting rooms, ballroom and farmer’s market will be joined by a new modern convention center that weaves the style, scale and rhythm of the historic Philadelphia architecture with the new addition.

The new addition to the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, California, which spans 40 years of design and construction, is the Red Building by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. The first phase of the three-part composition is the Blue Building was completed in 1975 by Cesar Pelli when he was Partner for Design at Gruen Associates. The Green Building and an outpost for the Museum of Contemporary was added in 1988. The Red Building is a programmatic addition to the showrooms and museum of the first two structures.

Spiretec is a 62,750 square meter mixed use area that is part of an IT office complex, spread across approx 85,000 square meters of land; with a built potential of approx 1,75,000 square meters. The project is in Greater Noida in Delhi, India.

The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) is hosting an exhibition of Palladio’s drawings, giving new insight into the use of drawings as a tool to record, develop and disseminate his ideas. Curated by Guido Beltramini, in collaboration with Charles Hind, Palladio at Work will be on view in the museum’s Octogonal Gallery from March 3 to May 22, 2011.

JGMA won the competition to design the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy High School (IHSCA) in Chicago, Illinois for the Institutio del Progreso Latio. The program is for a charter school that will serve 600 youth from Chicago communities. It will be the first career academy in the state of Illinois dedicated to health sciences. The new facility will also provide serves to consolidate existing programs under the Instituto.

Two Danish Studios have been selected to compete in the prestigious competition to design Dublin’s new National Concert Hall. The two finalists were narrowed down from a shortlist of renowned architects from 2008. The two studios, 3XN and Henning Larsen Architects, delivered spectacular designs, which, unfortunately, will not be realized due to the cancellation of competition under Ireland’s fragile economic situation.

SADAR + VUGA’s competition entry for the Intercity of Vienna, Austria is an urban redevelopment that stands as a symbol of quality architecture of the 21st century and one that uses the urban contextual history in its vision of the contemporary lifestyle. The site of this mixed use urban development is near the new railway station, which makes Intercity a node for newly arriving visitors to see Vienna through the context of the new architecture.

The following projects were selected by insulation specialist Saint-Gobain Isover as the eight shortlisted projects for the UK final of the Multi-Comfort House Competition. The competition produced many interesting solutions to the problem of urban development and energy efficient construction for high rise buildings.
