Architects in Movies
From the mid 1900′s to the beginning of the 2000′s, being an architect as a profession has made its way into key roles on the big screen for many big shot celebrities. Whether the roles they play in the movies are similar to the reality of the profession or not, I’m sure many architects that have watched some of these movies feel honored that their profession is one that deserves to be highlighted in ways that are not not just in architectural publications, but in the cinema world as well. More images after the break.

- Michael Keaton in White Noise (2005)
- Richard Gere in Intersection (1994)
- Wesley Snipes in Jungle Fever (1991)
- Paul Newman in Towering Inferno (1974)
- Albert Finney in Two for the Road (1967)
- Eiji Okada in Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959)
- Harry Fonda in 12 Angry Men (1957)
- Adam Sandler in Click (2006)
- Keanu Reeves in The Lake House (2005)
- Mark Ruffalo in Just Like Heaven (2005)
- Jude Law in Breaking and Entering (2006)

Working for Wesley Snipes would be interesting. I’d see a lot of blast-proof designs with secret rooms and escape routes that would not show up on a code review.
Well, let’s just say, I wouldn’t mind working for Keanu Reeves :D
Well, let’s just say, I wouldn’t mind working for Keanu Reeves … :D
Intersection is a remake of french movie “Les choses de la vie”, by Claude Sautet (1970), which is one of my favorite movies. Michel Piccoli’s character is indeed an architect in it.
Inception?
One of the best movies from the last year where the profession of an architect is a key factor in the movie
..and there’s a girl architect in inception!!!! In all those movies above it’s just men!
maybe they left her out cos she’s still a student? ;)
Charles Bronson’s character in “Death Wish,” anyone? Architect by day, vigilante by night. Hands-down the most accurate portrayal of an architect ever to appear on screen.
I agree, Inception is fine… the best…
Woody Harrelson played an architect in Indecent Proposal. “A brick just wants to be a brick.”
Yikes, where are the female architects, Hollywood?
there’s Hank Moody’s wife, Karen, in the HBO series “Californication”… architect… woman…
Y LAS MUJERES DÓNDE?
props for 12 angry men, unfortunately they forgot Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) in Sleepless In Seattle was an architect.
Kevin Klein in Life as a House!
I remember a female architect in Firewall, the Harrison Ford’s wife. Also, in Fear there’s another architect too.
Charles Bronson in Death wish 1974, Brian Dennehy in The belly of an Architect 1987. And, of course, George Costanza in Seinfeld who was not an architect but always wanted to be.
john cassavetes in SWEEP AWAY…architect loves young woman on a Greek Island….80′s
Kevin Kline in Life as a House (2001)
Michelle Pfeiffer in One Fine Day (1996)
“The Lake House” (not “house in the lake”) is the remake of the korean movie “Il Mare”.
And the great Christopher Plummer, the father of Reeves in the movie, is also an architect !
Matthew Perry and Oliver Platt was architects in “Three to Tango”.
Tom Hanks on “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt on “500 days of summer” (2009)
You forgot one – Kirk Douglas in “Strangers When We Meet” – one of my favorite
What about George Castanza? I know, Television but still. He WAS the master!
ted mosby in how i met your mother!
adam sandler in CLICK
and i believe he was some type of designer in anger managment
Jude Law is a landscape architect in Breaking and Entering
don’t for get mr. minniver (in “mrs. minniver” — classic wwII english film)
Wilbur in Mr. Ed was an architect who worked out of a barn he shared with a talking horse. And so was Mr. Brady of the Brady Bunch. the 60′s were the golden age of TV architects.
(500) Days of Summer (:
There was also the appearance of Matt Dillon with Michael Douglas in the Movie “You, me and Dupree” (2006). And Luke Wilson with Anna Faris in “My super ex-girlfriend” (2006)
There’s also a TV Show: How I met your Mother, the main charcater is Ted Mosby, a NY archictect. There are many episodes dedicated to his profession
Robert Downey Jr. in “Due Date”.
Adam Sandler in Click sums up todays architect. Classic details like is bomb car, constant work pressure, poor eating habits and the ‘treasured’ Eames recliner among other mis-matched furniture.
More sence than on TV shows I guess..
Mr Ed’s owner WILBER was an architect! What does that say about the profession…
~JDS
You forgot Ted Mosley, Architect, from How I Met Your Mother!! I know its a TV show but meh
…i remember in tv “the invaders”, and the architect david vincent (roy thinnes)…
David Duchovny in Red Shoe Diaries..
And how about “Fear”? William Petersen is an architect who ends up killing his daughter psycho boyfriend (Mark Wahlberg)
I’ve always admired Hollywood screenwriters, if you ask them, architects will always kill someone at the end of the movie.
At the end of the average stressful day only thought in head of every architect is: “If only I could kill my boss and costruction site menager and half of cotractors and…”
Now you see why writers think of us that way :D
i think the latest movie that one of its main character is an architect is “TREE OF LIFE ” whit acting by ” Sean Penn “.
