Located near the edge of the forest in Hamburg, a new residential building is now finished as a home for children and adolescents.

The characteristics of the building are based on a two colour relief facade embracing a compact house volume. A central staircase penetrates the division between floors in favour of communication to create a central open space for the community.

I’ve already responded positively on another blog about this structure.
I STILL think it’s wonderful… and redefines the ‘skin’ of a structure.

karl says:

it doesnt redefine anything. architects from the postmodern school or in some cases, architects lacking in quality or ambition have always used facades or skins as a means to spice up architecture that would otherwise be nothing more than average or common.

This house has as far as im concerned nothing in that communicates the story of the facade or skin in its structure, the building in itself is close to boring, nothing special when it comes to Raum, light or spaces in general.
it is simply the average, somehwat boring house with a “funny” facade on it, which as far as im concerned looks rather cheap.

the most fundamental question though is.
WHY WOULD YOU BUILD A HOUSE FOR children WITH NO SENSE OF HUMOUR OR JOY IN IT?
