Abandoned Toyo Ito

Back in 2006, the Torrevieja Relaxation Park in was built to be a landmark in the City and a referent in contemporary architecture, but its actual state is just the opposite.

Thanks to Abitare I got into this article that shows how the building is already in ruins just 4 years after its realization. The original project contained three buildings in the coasts of Torrevieja, but the Coast management department stopped the project, leaving it to the disuse consequences. Now Torrevieja has a landmark, but was this what they expected?

* Location to be used only as a reference. It could indicate city/country but not exact address.

another one modern building that gets old early. Modern architecture has that curse that become buildings old in a short space ot time.

well it does not help it’s cause if is left unfinished and with maintenance… of course if you are comparing it to a masonry building then you are right but this is a different kind of building

      Troy says:

“so let’s all make old architecture”

that’s quite the hyperbole. i think historical buildings are good to reference because their functionality is tried and true. modernism tries too hard at times to be sculpturally pleasing and ends up no longer needed and forgotten – like an impulse buy.

    @robledo

Another architect that can’t read. They clearly stated that the project hasn’t been finished or maintained – this has nothing to do with wether or not the building is modern.

    Rubén says:

It has not get old early. It was never finished, because the city hall started the works without an ecologycal study of the environment, and it´s placed on a natural park, which is a space protected. So it was denounced and the Judges stopped the works because they were illegal.
They were 3 buildings like this one in the project, but only 1 was built. Since then, the building has been abandoned and destructed.

Why do we need an “ArchDaily Recommends” bar sitting at the top of our browser after we click to a new website?

Just curious. Thanks.

My professor designed this with Ito when he was still working for him….

It’s a shame that it is in this state, after the hype it just becomes abandoned. Hopefully the government can kick start the project again

freq says:

if it’s true that they built this in a protected coastal area, a good thing they shut the work down. It’s funny how people would say that the project doesn’t “deserve” to be in this state, while there is strong evidence that, in fact, it does.

If it were a mundane concrete box no one would shed a tear over it. Hope someone cleans up that mess!
