Dutch Pavilion for Shanghai World Expo 2010

The Dutch submission to the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai is an exceptional one. This time around, it will not be the classic with long lines of visitors waiting outside and a presentation inside. The Netherlands is making its appearance at China’s world exposition along an entire street. The submission, entitled “Happy Street”, is the response by designer to the Chinese Expo theme “Better City, Better Life” and the sub-themes:

- Urban cultural diversity
- Urban economic growth and prosperity
- Innovation in science and technology in urban contexts
- Remodelling urban communities
- Interaction between urban and rural areas.

Find out more about Holland’s pavilion right here. More images and a video after the break.

g. sidari says:

i love this website. i love the content, and the ideas set forth by you guys.

however, these international expositions are such a miserable waste of our time and energy. the criticisms are numerous, we all know what they are, so maybe it’s time for the media to just leave them the hell alone. don’t give them the attention. because in the end, they won’t survive if the media ignores them, and again, we all know it..

the dutch have way too much to offer the world in terms of managing infrastructure within an unyielding sea, than to be given attention for this whimsical nonsense.

Ralph Kent says:

And to think of the real issues in the world and these things happen every 2 years. When are we going to stand up to this hubris, ego and frivolity? What is the point of this national showmanship – its like we are building addicts – we do because we can. Meanwhile, if you look back at the history of most World Expo sites it like looking at a knackers yard. As g.sidari says, the architectural press should start ignoring this anachronistic nonsense and with any luck, they’ll realise that they are about 100 years past their sell by date and stop holding them

Damned smart those Dutch..while other countries have spent(?)
efforts to design/ built something megalomaniac from the outside (and they all look like Zaha Hadid rip-offs), with no whatsoever contents from the inside, the Dutch keep surprising
us with smart thinking….no queuing…a lineair street design
in carrerra style.Just like MVRDV’s design back in hannover,
again the most original pavilion.
I agree, kill the Expo, waist of time and resources.
